The Salon Wrap-Up for October 26, 2014 - "Magic: Black, White or Otherwise"

October 26, 2014
Theme: “Magic: Black, White or Otherwise”

Our amazing founder & host, Mark Janas, and producer, Tanya Moberly, welcomed us to a spooky and festive Salon! It was a raucous event with a sold-out crowd, and I can’t help but admit that I was excited to see a plastic pumpkin on the piano with candy inside it. :) At the risk of taking the cliche too far, there were very few tricks in a sea of treats!

Our Co-Hosts were MAC & Bistro Award Winner Janice Hall & MAC Award Winner Adam Shapiro! Janice will be heading to Des Moines in December to perform in yet another opera and Adam will be at The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC 10010 – on November 9th at 4pm repeating his 54 Below debut show NOTHING NORMAL. For more information, visit www.adamshapiro.net and look for Janice on Facebook.

For the first song of the evening, Adam and Janice came to the stage dressed as Morticia and Gomez from The Addams Family and did a charming rendition of “This Is Halloween” (complete with clever choreography!) For their mid-show set, Janice started with “The Voice” (dressed as Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty” - a clever pairing, I think!) Adam followed that with “Let It Go”(complete with a braided blonde wig, lady makeup, tossed confetti, a fabulous cape, and lots & lots of sequins - there may or may not have been a strip tease involved!) They finished with a tongue in cheek, Disney-fied “Bosom Buddies” with perfect patter for their costumes. For the final show of the night they sang an amazing medley (with amended lyrics) of “Hijo de la Luna”/ “Trick or Treat” / “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” / “Black & White.” The full-to-the-seams crowd burst into applause, not only because of the talent but in appreciation for the care and joy they put into crafting their hosting engagement. This was WELL worth the cover charge alone, and there was 3 more hours of talent to be had!

Update: October 27 - Just found these videos of the event, posted by Adam on YouTube!

Our Salon Spotlight featured MAC, Bistro & Nightlife Award Winner Daryl Glenn! Daryl doesn’t have any shows coming up. He’s bringing back his show, “Daryl Sings Steve (Sondheim)” - check him out on Facebook for more details!

Daryl (joined by Karen Dryer on piano) started his set by setting up a selection of props, which he drew from for his songs, “The Blob” (single maraca, kazoo); “Halloween Theme: Name That Tune” (iPhone, and candy for the prizes he gave out!); and a bluesy “Haunted” (sans props, because he had his fantastic voice!)

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

For today’s Classical Corner, founder Mark Janas introduced us to classical pianist, Sam Bagala. He invited up to play Chopin’s “C#Minor Nocturne” (fitting, as Mark told us that October 17 was the anniversary of Chopin’s birth!) It was powerful and had the audience enthralled. I only wish we could have heard more - he was wonderful!

The Salon Wrap-Up for October 5, 2014 - "War and Peace"

October 5, 2014
Theme: “War and Peace”

Our amazing producer, Tanya Moberly, welcomed us to The Salon with word that founder, Mark Janas, was currently at 54 Below performing with Len Cariou to celebrate his 75th birthday. While we miss him tonight, we’re thrilled to know that such beautiful music is being made just 10 blocks north in addition to here tonight!

So we were very lucky to have, as Guest Host/Pianist, Multiple MAC & Bistro Award Winner Steven Ray Watkins! As an actor he has appeared in THE LAST SESSION, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and in the national tours of BIG, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN and SHOWBOAT. As a musician, he has worked as a session player, a musical/vocal director in the theater and arranger/musical director in cabaret with such names as Patti LuPone, John Turturro, Karen Mason, Amanda McBroom, Lennie Watts and Sharon McNight, among many others.  For more information, you can find Steven on Facebook.
Guest Host / Pianist Steven Ray Watkins

Our Co-Hosts were MAC Award Nominee Dawn Derow & MAC and 2-Time Emmy Award Nominee Kathleen France! Dawn & Kathleen will be appearing at The Duplex – 61 Christopher St, NYC 10014 – in REVOLUTION on October 20th, October 28th, November 9th & November 11th. All shows at 6:30pm. For more information: www.dawnderow.com / www.kathleenfrance.com / www.theduplex.com

For the first song of the evening, Dawn and Kathleen gave us a beautiful rendition of the Indigo Girls hit “Come On Home.” Kathleen followed that with an inventive arrangement of “Smells Like Teen Spirit / Somebody To Love” (with amazing backing vocals by Steven Ray Watkins!) For their mid-show song, they gave us a beautiful duo arrangement of “I Need To Wake Up.” To close out the evening, they sang a stunning and powerful, “For What It’s Worth” (with Andrew throwing in a 3rd harmony.) Can’t wait to see this show!

Press Photo for "Revolution"- the show by Co-Hosts Kathleen France & Dawn Derow

Our Salon Spotlight featured MAC Award Nominee Jim Speake! Jim will be appearing at The Duplex – 61 Christopher St, NYC 10014 – in I’M A BRASS BAND – JIM SPEAKE SINGS CY COLEMAN on October 11th at 4:30pm & October 19th at 4:30pm. For more information: www.jimpeake.com / www.theduplex.com

For Jim’s set, he brought us three amazing songs that perfectly showed his style and sensitivity: “Tennessee Homesick Blues” by Dolly Parton; “I Never Met a Man” from Will Rogers Follies; “It’s Not Where You Start, It’s Where You Finish” from See Saw. What a delight!

Salon Spotlight Jim Speake

Quick Wrap: Steven’s Corner

Steven started by saying that normally at this time of night we would be seeing Mark in “Classical Corner.” Because Steven was here, it’s (naturally) called Steven’s Corner - he mused that this was exactly where his mother sent him when he wouldn’t practice the piano!

Steven’s set was dynamic and nostalgia producing, with his favorite (on-theme) “War & Peace“ songs - “Chains of Love” (recorded by Erasure), Elton’ John’s “Talking Old Soldiers” and Holly Near’s “Love Don’t Need A Reason.” Incidentally, he mentioned that if any female were looking for a male drag name, they might try, “Warren Piece.”
