The Salon Wrap-Up for February 23, 2020: Showbiz!

The excitement was palpable Sunday evening, as two powerhouse women took the stage /took over at Salon. Marta Sanders and Leanne Borghesi, a pair of belty, brassy broads, have teamed up in a show they call, oddly enough, "Show Broads," and they gave us a taste of their wares tonight. The show is returning on March 8th, at Birdland Jazz Club.

Leanne started us off with the obvious choice, "There's No Business Like Show Business," but was almost immediately interrupted by Marta, who rushed to the stage--late--because "she was in the bathroom." A small spat about professionalism ensued, and then the girls got down to business, segueing into "Use What You Got" (Cy Coleman), which they most certainly did. They also used mics, but it wasn't really necessary; they were probably heard all the way to 42nd Street.
After Classical Corner, Marta returned to the stage to give us some background on her impressive showbiz trajectory, which led into a rousing rendition of Sondheim's "Broadway Baby." Then big-hearted, bicoastal Leanne (she's from California, you know) returned to advise us all to "Lighten Up," a welcome reminder these days. The ladies closed the evening with the full version of "There's No Business...".

Mark Janas/Classical Corner

Tonight, Mark discussed Robert Schumann's beautiful song "Widmung," which will be featured, sung by Dawn Derow, in the new full-length Classical Corner, on February 24th, at Don't Tell Mama. Widmung (German for "Dedication"), was Schumann's love letter to his future wife, Clara Wieck. Later, Franz Liszt wrote an elaborate transcription of the tune for piano. However, Clara, who served as her husband's editor, wasn't pleased with all the extra runs and arpeggios Liszt added, so she asked him to write a simpler version. Both versions still exist, but, as pianist Matthew Martin Ward put it, why would you want to play the simpler version? And with that, he played us the full-on Liszt fantasy, beautifully.

The Salon Wrap-Up for February 16, 2020: The Gypsy in My Soul

Last night's theme was about the longing to travel, to move, to escape, to hang hats and call it home, and especially about those who roam the land and create art wherever they go. Our Co-Host was the Bistro and two-time MAC Award songstress, Dawn Derow! She - who can sing everything from opera to jazz, to rock and musical theater - has produced shows like "1941," "Legit," and "The House that Built Me," is presenting a night of Eydie Gormé; thus, the theme of the evening was "The Gypsy in My Soul." Dawn started the evening out with this title song, with smooth and powerful jazz vocals, dexterous on the blue notes, and looking amazing in a dark red wrap dress and classic 1940s hairdo. After a costume change (see the Classical Corner notes below), Dawn sat at a stool at the piano and sang the sultry and honestly simple "I Don’t Want to Walk Without You," a gorgeous song by Jule Styne and Frank Loesser. To end the evening, and to include the title of the evening in the first lyric, she performed the rock ballad "You’re My Home" by Billy Joel, which also included a powerhouse belt at the end and a bit of lyric editing to add a nod to The Salon: no matter where she roams, this open mic is her home.

Dawn has a number of performances coming up:

You can see her NOW in the brand new music video of Brandi Carlile's song "Every Time I Hear That Song" on YouTube! Performed by Dawn Derow, Suzanne Fiore, and Jason Reiff, with guitar by Sean Harkness, guitar/mandolin/sound mix by Peter Calo. Camera work by Perry Quaranta.

On Friday, February 21, 2020 (7pm), she will be a part of the stellar lineup of "Green Room 42 Swings Sinatra," hosted by Will Friedwald, at The Green Room 42, 570 10th Avenue, NYC.

"Gypsy in My Soul: The Songs of Eydie Gormé" will perform with music director Ian Herman at 9:30pm at The Beach Cafe (1326 2nd Avenue, NYC) on Saturday, March 14th, 2020, 9:30pm. Small seating capacity, and tickets only sold online, so advance tickets highly recommended!

Mark Janas/Classical Corner

With the theme of "Gypsy," most classical minds immediately think of the diva-gypsy herself, Carmen by Georges Bizet. Maureen Taylor, who performed the piece with the Chicago Lyric Opera amongst stars as Placido Domingo, talked a bit about the character of Carmen, and how the song "Seguidilla" in Act I sets up the wandering attitude of the title character to roam. A seguidilla is a traditional folk dance, so it's no wonder Carmen (who seductively dances her way out of captivity) would be treated to the flamenco-style of music. We then were prompted by Mark to sing "Happy Birthday" to Maureen, and he added an appropriately Bizet-esque operatic ending on the piano.

We then had our Co-Host Dawn Derow appear before us after a costume change, switching her dark red for a sparkling onesie and dazzling rhinestone jewelry. Thus attired, she sang "Glitter and Be Gay" from Leonard Bernstein's Candide. As a woman who travels her way from lover to lover to get to the top (with and without guilt), Dawn added dance steps to match her high notes and high sparkle, with the right over the top drama to make her Cunégonde memorable!

If you love the Classical Corner section each Salon, a reminder that Mark is doing a Classical Corner Series at Don’t Tell Mama; the next is Monday, February 24, 2020 at 7pm at Don't Tell Mama on the theme of "Follow the Lieder", focusing on art songs and the cultivation of the lyrics. Tickets can be reserved here.
