The Salon Wrap-Up for July 28th, 2019: "Just Out of Reach"

Image result for stephen mosher photographyOur host for Salon on this beautiful summer's eve was singer/photographer/writer/fitness instructor (and a few other things) Stephen Mosher. Stephen made his cabaret debut at Don't Tell Mama in 2017, in a show called "Storyteller."  Tonight he gave us both his songs and his stories.

He opened the evening's festivities with a charming hit from the '60's, "Come Saturday Morning"(Fred Karlin and Dory Previn), accompanied by some happy reminiscences of the Saturday mornings of his childhood (cleaning the house!).

After the break, Stephen was back with Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets." He relayed a very funny story about the first time he heard an Elton John song at a party. When he went to purchase some of John's albums, he deduced from the outlandish outfits on the album covers that John MIGHT be GAY, and certainly wasn't keeping it a secret (unlike himself). So, he took the records out of their covers so no one could guess his secret. Then, on another occasion, his crush on David Cassidy inspired him to leave the house wearing a jacket with no shirt one night, but fortunately, his mother--as he put it--saved his life, by insisting he rethink that plan.

The next song on the program was a thought-provoking one, written by Henry Mancini and Alan and Marilyn Bergman, titled "Where Do You Catch the Bus for Tomorrow?" Stephen's final song in the three-song-set was Bob Dylan's wonderful "I Shall Be Released."

Stephen closed the evening with his "favorite Christmas song," by Alicia Witt, since, after all, Christmas things are already appearing in the stores, and it's never too early to start the madness. The song is the hilarious "I'm Not Ready for Christmas."

Quick Wrap-Up: Classical Corner

Mark opened Classical Corner tonight with two snippets of music: one from Vivaldi's Gloria, and one from Bach's Prelude in C#. Aside from the fact that both composers died on the same day (this day, July 28th), what they most have in common is that they were both part of the Baroque Era in music. The Baroque Era was a time when buildings, clothing, and many other elements of life, including music, were ornate and elaborate. As Mark described it, if music were a timepiece, the Baroque Era was when composers were concerned with how the mechanism worked, how it all fit together.

Elements of Baroque music include: imitative texture--in piano works, each hand imitates the melody of the other--ornamentation, and clarity of the lines and how they intertwine.
He illustrated, by playing excerpts from several different Bach inventions, how the lines dovetail and sometimes mirror each other exactly (canon). Finally, he played two short pieces for us in their entirety: the C minor Fugue, and the Prelude in C Sharp.

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 21st, 2019: "Light In The Dark"

Our very own light ... Mark Janas is back!  While we have had some AMAZING guest hosts/pianists, everyone was thrilled to see and hear Mark again!  And joining Mark tonight as our fabulous co-host was the phenomenal Michael Osso!  Michael started our evening with the beautiful and moving "A Light In The Dark" from Next To Normal.  He opened the second set with songs from his cabaret show, "Words Matter," which were "What More Can I Say," "Something To Save," and [a personal favorite of mine] "Old Friend."  He closed the evening with "You're There Too."

Michael will return to Don't Tell Mama on Thursday, September 5th, and Saturday, September 7th, both at 7pm in "Words Matter."

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight tonight was the wonderful 2-time Bistro and 3-time MAC Award-winner Meg Flather!  Meg started with "Open A New Window," continued with "Outbound Pane," and closed with the touching "Why Can't I Forget Him?"  Meg also brought up special guest, the marvelous Sally Darling, to sing "Only See You."

Meg will be appearing at Don't Tell Mama on July 28th at 5pm in "Outbound Plane."  Her "Meg Flather Songs: A Cabaret Sisterhood" returns to Don't Tell Mama on September 14th at 4pm, October 6th at 4pm, and November 2nd at 5pm.  Her albums are available on iTunes, and her book, Home Shopping Diva, is available on Amazon.

Quick Wrap-Up: Classical Corner

The incomparable Mark Janas was extraordinary tonight. The piano was even missing a D, but his brilliance didn't let it show.  Mark's piece tonight was the Franz Liszt piano transcription of the Liebestod (Love-Death) from Richard Wagner's opera "Tristan und Isolde."  The piece constantly switches from tense harmonies to such sweetness in the melody with such longing and such love -- a powerful example of "light and dark."

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 14th, 2019: "In Search Of…"

Tanya introduced our non-Bastille Day-themed "In Search Of..." and quickly got us clapping for our  guides for the evening, since the audience and all the singers were packed! Our Guest Host was singer-pianist-songwriter-musical-director Steven Ray Watkins and our Co-Host was long-time Saloner and Mamette Marnie Klar, who was awarded the Bistro Award for Outstanding Tribute Show earlier this year. Marnie started out with the country southern story-song "Ace Insurance Man" by Bobbie Gentry (the composer Marnie was honored a Bistro Award for), Steven did some voiceover interjections in between lyrics, and Marnie showcased her storytelling and diction abilities on a rockin' melody.  After the break, Marnie talked about her youthful search for stardom and her mom's Jazzercize classes, during which she fantasized about singing duets -  they then cheekily went into the 70s disco song "Guilty," which featured Steven's harmony vocals. The flowingly beautiful "Keep Breathing" was next, which allowed Marnie to go into her deep alto vocals as well as soaring mezzo notes.  She then became a little tongue in cheek with the rockingly honest and funny "Runaway" by Nik Kershaw. To end the evening, she sang "Fancy," by Bobbie Gentry, a country-pop crossover song that spoke of one woman's solution to overcoming poverty, and the heart-aching story behind it.

Steven's Corner
Steven took off his glasses during his corner since allllll his music was memorized, and thought that he'd combine tonight's theme with what he would have by doing a few weeks ago for Pride Salon, so he did an "In Search of...a Boyfriend" series of songs. He began with Elton John's classic "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road," which highlighted Steven's gorgeous piano playing in addition to fluid tenor vocals. Next, he sang a song he wrote for Lennie Watt's album years ago, the gospel-infused "Give Me a Voice." Twenty years later, Steven still has a few modern political thoughts on his mind that relate to these lyrics, and taught us harmony on the chorus featuring the lyrics "I've got the heart, I've got the soul." This was a stirring, uplifting, and empowering song, and we loved singing along. He ended with a song that says, to Steven, everything that needs to be said: "Love Don't Need a Reason" by Peter Allen, Michael Callen and Marsha Malamet.

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 7th, 2019: "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days Of Summer"

After we all got out of the heat of the New York street and into the comfortable Don't Tell Mama space, ordered a few cool drinks, and certainly not ready to be lazy on giving applause, we started the show! This year's MAC Award Winner for Best Male Debut, Tim Cahill, was the Co-Host of the evening's entertainment, which was appropriately themed "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days Of Summer." Tim shared his zany musical energy with Jim Harder, his long-time musical director-accomplice. With picnic blanket and basket festooning the piano, Tim first went into "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days of Summer," but set to the melody of Gershwin's "Summertime," which was hilarious to hear. Featuring Tim and Jim's duetting vocals, they then ebulliently went into the official "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days of Summer" melody with humor and gusto. After a quick costume change and prop pickup, Tim then sang it in German, and I could almost taste the beer coming from his St. Pauli Girl-style 2D beer steins. After some sausage-slinging (it's not what you think), they ended the song and went into the hosting duties! For the beginning of the second act, Tim brought us into the romantic Parisian mood with the lilting "Early in the Morning/Sous le Ciel de Paris," which featured his gorgeously rich bari-tenor voice and wonderful connection to the lyric. Summer brought the memory of childhood modeling in his past, so he donned a huge bonnet (Jim with a matching pair of pink flamingo sunglasses), and then sang "Her Bathing Suit Never Got Wet." Thru this comedy specialty number, out came more and more piano flourishes, musical instruments, and facial expressions from Tim. To finish the evening, they performed a combination of the lunar-themed "The Moon is Pink Tonight/Moon River"

You can next see Tim Cahill (along with Dawn Derow, Blake Allen, Cassie Levine and many others)  in "An Evening With...Doris Day" hosted by Doris Dear on Friday, July 19, 2019, 7pm, at The Green Room 42, 570 10th Ave, NYC. Tickets can be bought online.

Matthew's Corner
Matthew sang and played for himself on a collection of songs, starting with the call-and-response song "Lazy Day" a la Spanky and Our Gang (1967), complete with swaying 60s piano. He then brought it into a pensive mood, singing 1973s "American Tune" by Paul Simon (which was wrtitten with some inspiration by classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, and which was also an appropriate closing of the July 4th weekend). As Matthew explained: "here's to this country, coming together." To complete his corner, he sang "Half Way Home" from his original musical about Casper The Friendly Ghost. He played Casper, who explains his history and why he haunts that particular mansion, singing with his friend - played by Joshua Bennett - while Sierra Rein and Steve Ahrons voiced the ghostly memory of his parents.
