The Salon Wrap-Up for December 9, 2018: "Such a Lot of Livin' to Do," with co-host Bobbie Horowitz

Sunday, December 9, 2018

With a fanfare from Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," (played by Matthew Martin Ward), our Host, Mark Janas, took the stage.  And it turns out that a fanfare was in order, because there was plenty to talk about tonight. First order of business: a quick recording of "Happy Birthday," sung by everyone for the brother of Heather Cariou (wife of Len Cariou), who is struggling with cystic fibrosis. Today is his birthday.
Then, our producer, Tanya Moberly, made a momentous announcement:

In 2019, Salon will be moving to Don't Tell Mama!

We will be in the big room, with food from the restaurant, and they will take credit cards! Time change: sign-up starts at 7, and Salon will run from 7:30-10:30.

Tonight's Salon was a small but mighty group, and we were all able to relax and let our hair down.  As co-host Bobbie Horowitz took the stage, she commented that she could honestly say she loved everyone in the room! (And, it should be noted that probably a third of the songs performed tonight were written by composers who were in that room!)

Our Bobbie

Bobbie opened with her original song "Never a Freshman Again," which celebrates looking forward to getting older.
For her three-song set, Bobbie treated us to three more of her originals. She opened with a song about her beloved New York, "Planning a Vacation." Her second song was the lovely holiday ballad, "Lots of Love from Me to You." She closed the set on a serious note, singing a song she wrote after 9/11, "Together America." She commented  that the song is very appropriate for the country's current situation. Bobbie's evening closer was a less serious take on patriotism:  "Doin' it for America" describes how it's our patriotic duty to shop 'til we drop. (Well, that's a relief!).

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Tonight's Classical Corner featured Deborah Stone singing the famous aria "Ombra mai fu," from Handel's opera Serse. Mark introduced the piece by telling us that, while the opera was not particularly successful, the aria, composed in 1738, is one of Handel's best known and most-performed arias. In fact, this aria was the first piece of music ever transmitted over the radio, in Canada in 1906.
For her second selection, Deborah sang the Italian art song "Che Fiero Costume", by the composer Giovanni Legrenzi (1626-1690), which is a comic-angry tirade by the singer against Cupid for propagating love in the world, and bringing such misery on us all.

Tonight's Salon Co-Host for "Love Is In The Air" is:

Dorian Woodruff  introducing his upcoming show- "Welcome Home: Everybody Has A Story"
When I was a kid, I always wanted to see the inside of other folks apartments and homes. What kind of furniture did they have? What kind of art? What color did they paint the walls? What kind of wallpaper?  Through my prying and being slightly pushy, much to the dismay of my grandmother, I finagled my way in to see most of them. I learned their stories. I also discovered who had country homes, who could cook, who was friendly, and who wasn't. As I grew older a marvelous thing happened.  I became friends with these treasures.
2016 MAC Award Nominee for Male Vocalist, Dorian Woodruff is a versatile cabaret and jazz singer, director, and writer. He has performed in clubs internationally with stops in Las Vegas, Nashville, London, Paris, and Berlin.

In New York, he has appeared at Joe's Pub, Feinstein's 54 Below, Don't Tell Mama, and his successful shows I Believe in Love and Standard Time, at the Metropolitan Room, in Chicago at Davenports and The Jazz Cave at the Nashville Jazz Workshop.  This fall, he will appear on the opening night of the New York Cabaret Convention in Lincoln Centers Rose Hall.

"Many songwriters of today would be lucky to have their more thoughtful material rendered by such a thoughtful and caring vocalist."  Rob Lester, Cabaret Scenes

"Dorian Woodruff's gorgeous sound will have just warmed your ears sufficiently that you won't need to put your fuzzy hat on when you leave his show." Rob Lester, Cabaret Scenes
