The Salon Wrap-Up for October 5, 2014 - "War and Peace"
October 5, 2014
Theme: “War and Peace”
Our amazing producer, Tanya Moberly, welcomed us to The Salon with word that founder, Mark Janas, was currently at 54 Below performing with Len Cariou to celebrate his 75th birthday. While we miss him tonight, we’re thrilled to know that such beautiful music is being made just 10 blocks north in addition to here tonight!
So we were very lucky to have, as Guest Host/Pianist, Multiple MAC & Bistro Award Winner Steven Ray Watkins! As an actor he has appeared in THE LAST SESSION, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and in the national tours of BIG, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN and SHOWBOAT. As a musician, he has worked as a session player, a musical/vocal director in the theater and arranger/musical director in cabaret with such names as Patti LuPone, John Turturro, Karen Mason, Amanda McBroom, Lennie Watts and Sharon McNight, among many others. For more information, you can find Steven on Facebook.

Our Co-Hosts were MAC Award Nominee Dawn Derow & MAC and 2-Time Emmy Award Nominee Kathleen France! Dawn & Kathleen will be appearing at The Duplex – 61 Christopher St, NYC 10014 – in REVOLUTION on October 20th, October 28th, November 9th & November 11th. All shows at 6:30pm. For more information: www.dawnderow.com / www.kathleenfrance.com / www.theduplex.com
For the first song of the evening, Dawn and Kathleen gave us a beautiful rendition of the Indigo Girls hit “Come On Home.” Kathleen followed that with an inventive arrangement of “Smells Like Teen Spirit / Somebody To Love” (with amazing backing vocals by Steven Ray Watkins!) For their mid-show song, they gave us a beautiful duo arrangement of “I Need To Wake Up.” To close out the evening, they sang a stunning and powerful, “For What It’s Worth” (with Andrew throwing in a 3rd harmony.) Can’t wait to see this show!

For Jim’s set, he brought us three amazing songs that perfectly showed his style and sensitivity: “Tennessee Homesick Blues” by Dolly Parton; “I Never Met a Man” from Will Rogers Follies; “It’s Not Where You Start, It’s Where You Finish” from See Saw. What a delight!

Quick Wrap: Steven’s Corner
Steven started by saying that normally at this time of night we would be seeing Mark in “Classical Corner.” Because Steven was here, it’s (naturally) called Steven’s Corner - he mused that this was exactly where his mother sent him when he wouldn’t practice the piano!
Steven’s set was dynamic and nostalgia producing, with his favorite (on-theme) “War & Peace“ songs - “Chains of Love” (recorded by Erasure), Elton’ John’s “Talking Old Soldiers” and Holly Near’s “Love Don’t Need A Reason.” Incidentally, he mentioned that if any female were looking for a male drag name, they might try, “Warren Piece.”

The Salon Wrap-Up for September 21, 2014 - "The Times of Our Lives"
September 21, 2014
Theme: “The Times of Our Lives”
Our amazing founder and host, Mark Janas, welcomed us to The Salon with some powerful words about the times of our lives. With the recent passing of Joan Rivers and Polly Bergen, Mark reflected on the gifts that being alive brings, and ushered in another magical night on 44th Street. And then he introduced our producer, Tanya Moberly, who gave us a charming rundown on how The Salon works... and then we were off!
Our Co-Host was MAC & Bistro Award Winner Kevin Dozier! Kevin will be a featured performer at QUIET PLEASE THERE’S A LADY ON THE STAGE: A Celebration of Julie Wilson’s 90th Birthday at The 25th Annual Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center - 3 Columbus Circle, NYC 10019 – on October 21st at 6pm. For more information: www.kevindozier.com.
Kevin started the show with a medley of “Sailin’ On” and “On My Way To You.” For his 3-song set at the top of Act II, he sang beautiful renditions of “If I Would Ever Leave You”, “The Journey,” and a medley of “Always” & “Time Heals Everything.” To close the evening, Kevin sang an uplifting, “Bless Your Heart” by Alex Rybeck. (All of these arrangements were done by Alex Rybeck and can be found on Kevin’s latest CD!)
Co-host Kevin Dozier! |
Our Salon Spotlight featured MAC Award Nominee Barb Malley & Multiple MAC & Bistro Award Winner Ricky Ritzel! Barb & Ricky will be appearing in EAT! DRINK! BE MERRY! for Cabaret Cares 9 at Roy Arias Studios - 300 West 43rd St, NYC 10036 – on October 25th at 7pm. One night only! For more information: www.barbaramalley.com.
For Barb’s set, she sang an adorable duet with Ricky called, “You’re Timeless To Me”, a touching “Days of Wine and Roses” and closed with a great medley of Jerry Herman songs. Be sure to see this show - it’s for a good cause!
Quick Wrap: Classical Corner
Mark Janas Classical Corner started by introducing special guest, Dawn Derow. He thought about the theme, “The Time of Our Lives” and pondered about what many people’s best times have been. For many it was college - for Dawn Derow, who studied opera at Boston Conservatory, it was no exception! To honor her past (and to promote her upcoming show, “Legit” at the Metropolitan Room) Mark invited her to perform several arias, which were incredibly sung and acted! She sang from the operas:
La Boheme (Giacomo Puccini)
Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss)
Old Maid and the Thief (Gian Carlo Menotti)
Dawn’s upcoming show, “Legit” - with musical direction by Mark Janas - is one night only: Friday, September 26, 2014 (9:30pm) at the Metropolitan Room.
