The Salon Wrap-Up for July 7th, 2019: "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days Of Summer"

After we all got out of the heat of the New York street and into the comfortable Don't Tell Mama space, ordered a few cool drinks, and certainly not ready to be lazy on giving applause, we started the show! This year's MAC Award Winner for Best Male Debut, Tim Cahill, was the Co-Host of the evening's entertainment, which was appropriately themed "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days Of Summer." Tim shared his zany musical energy with Jim Harder, his long-time musical director-accomplice. With picnic blanket and basket festooning the piano, Tim first went into "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days of Summer," but set to the melody of Gershwin's "Summertime," which was hilarious to hear. Featuring Tim and Jim's duetting vocals, they then ebulliently went into the official "The Hazy-Lazy-Crazy Days of Summer" melody with humor and gusto. After a quick costume change and prop pickup, Tim then sang it in German, and I could almost taste the beer coming from his St. Pauli Girl-style 2D beer steins. After some sausage-slinging (it's not what you think), they ended the song and went into the hosting duties! For the beginning of the second act, Tim brought us into the romantic Parisian mood with the lilting "Early in the Morning/Sous le Ciel de Paris," which featured his gorgeously rich bari-tenor voice and wonderful connection to the lyric. Summer brought the memory of childhood modeling in his past, so he donned a huge bonnet (Jim with a matching pair of pink flamingo sunglasses), and then sang "Her Bathing Suit Never Got Wet." Thru this comedy specialty number, out came more and more piano flourishes, musical instruments, and facial expressions from Tim. To finish the evening, they performed a combination of the lunar-themed "The Moon is Pink Tonight/Moon River"

Matthew's Corner
Matthew sang and played for himself on a collection of songs, starting with the call-and-response song "Lazy Day" a la Spanky and Our Gang (1967), complete with swaying 60s piano. He then brought it into a pensive mood, singing 1973s "American Tune" by Paul Simon (which was wrtitten with some inspiration by classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, and which was also an appropriate closing of the July 4th weekend). As Matthew explained: "here's to this country, coming together." To complete his corner, he sang "Half Way Home" from his original musical about Casper The Friendly Ghost. He played Casper, who explains his history and why he haunts that particular mansion, singing with his friend - played by Joshua Bennett - while Sierra Rein and Steve Ahrons voiced the ghostly memory of his parents.
