The Salon Wrap-Up for March 12, 2017 - "Icons & Idols"

The loving crowd was delighted with such inventive theme this week - "Icons & Idols." It gave all of our singers a chance to tell us who they admire and look up to, and each song then took on a new significance which was lovely to behold. Not only that, but founder Mark Janas reminded us that when living in a great city like NYC there are some of us lucky enough to have found their idols become their colleagues and friends. I certainly feel that way, being a part of The Salon.

We also had a very special celebration tonight - it was producer Tanya Moberly's birthday! The sold-out crowd sang a boisterous "Happy Birthday" and enjoyed a bit of cake - Happy Birthday, Tanya!

Our Co-Host was 2016 MAC Award Winner for Female Debut Natalie Arneson! The evening started with Natalie singing a subtle and smooth, "New York City Blues." For her mid-show set Natalie invited Matt Baker to the piano and started with Peggy Lee's "Hallelujah I Love Him So." For her second song Natalie talked about how the great musicians often take well known songs and give them their own creative spin. She and Matt then gave us a haunting yet cheeky rendition of "Fever." The last song of the set was a fun and enigmatic, "I'm Gonna Go Fishing." And for the last song of the evening, Natalie joined up with Mark Janas on a stunning and crowd pleasing, "Lean On Me." (May it also be noted: Natalie adorable baby Nikolai joined her on the stage for two numbers and couldn't resist singing into the mic - that is, when he wasn't gazing adoringly into his mother's eyes!)

Natalie will be releasing a CD of her recent, critically acclaimed Peggy Lee show later this year with Matt Baker. For more information, look for Natalie on Facebook.

Co-Host Natalie Arneson!

Our Salon Spotlight featured Bistro & MAC Award Winner Dawn Derow and Bistro & Multiple MAC Award Winner Sean Harkness! To start their 3-song set, Sean did a powerful original solo song on guitar which got the audience hooting and hollering. He then invited Dawn to join him at the mic for one of their beloved "Dawn-Sean" arrangements - a delicate and moving medley of, "I Don't Wanna Know/Say You Love Me". They completed their set with one of my very favorite songs by the Indigo Girls - a powerfully performed, "The Power of Two."

Salon Spotlight: Sean Harkness and Dawn Derow!

Dawn & Sean (& Suzanne Fiore) will be at Carroll Place – 157 Bleecker St, NYC 10012 – on May 2nd with sets at 7:30pm & 9pm. For more information: www.carrollplacenyc.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

For tonight's classical corner, host Mark Janas invited to the microphone the incredible Joseph DiSalle, an operatic tenor who studied with the great Franco Corelli. Joseph brought us three selections - the first, sung in French, was "O Paradis" from Giacomo Meyebeer's opera, L'Africaine. The second impressive song was the Italian, "L'Ultima Canzone" by Francesco Paolo Tosti. To close out the set (and also the 1st half of the evening) Joseph sang a lovely, "Dicitencello Vuie" with music by Rodolfo Falvo and lyrics by Enzo Fusco.
