The Salon Wrap-Up for March 19, 2017 - "Love and Marriage"

There was hope and excitement in the air at tonight's Salon, and I think that's owed to the fun and inspiring theme: Love And Marriage! It also may have had something to do with the fantastic talent on tap for the evening.

Our Co-Host was MAMA’S NEXT BIG ACT Finalist Lena Moy-Borgen! She launched the show with an energetic and fairy-tale inspired, "Happily Ever After." She led the second act with an inventive and fun medley of "Married" from Cabaret and "Not Getting Married Today" from Company)- both of which took on new meaning when sung together! She then grabbed "Cherry," her affectionately named red ukelele, to serenade her husband with a sweet, "Grow Old With You." The last song of this set was a raucous song I think we can all relate to, "I Want It All." And for the final song of the evening, Lena sang the fun, musical theater standard, "I Can Cook, Too" from On The Town.

Lena will be bringing her brand new show LENALENALENA – THE AWARDS SHOW! to Don’t Tell Mama – 343 West 46th St, NYC 10036 – on Wednesday, May 3rd & Saturday, May 6th. Both shows at 8:15pm. For more information: www.donttellmamanyc.com

Co-Host Lena Moy-Borgen!

Our Salon Spotlight featured Singer/Songwriter Andy Marino! Andy came to the stage with his guitar and brought in his friend EJ Holahan to join him on bass (with accompanying drums on track, which rounded out the performance beautifully.) He started his set of original songs with a delicate, "When You're Far Away" with EJ on backing vocals. For his next song, Andy sang the lovely ballad, "Patient Heart." He finished out his set with a dedication to his wife, a fun, rockabilly-infused "Honey, Please Don't Stop!"

Andy will be returning to Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3 – 185 Orchard St, NYC 10001 (btwn Houston & Stanton) – with ANDY & FRIENDS on Saturday, April 1st at 7pm. For more information: www.reverbnation.com/andymarino / www.rockwoodmusichall.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Salon's Founder and Host, Mark Janas, introduced us to a very special Classical Corner with a segment he's been wanting to do for a long time. As many people know, on Monday night Bobbie Horowitz is honoring Salon sponsor Father Jeff Hamblin in her series, "It's Only A Number," at the Metropolitan Room. At that event, one of the songs that will be presented is a choral number regularly done at Father Hamblin's Saint Clement's Church. So Mark invited many of the choral members to Salon to sing for us!

The choir included David Ballard, Maria Fernanda Brea, Janice Hall, Sierra Rein, Sarah Rice, Danielle Erin Rhodes, Steve Schachlin, Kyle Scudder, Luke Tudball, Heather Tudball, Chris Wade, and Stephen Wilde. The song, "Allelujah" was written by Randall Thompson (1899-1984), an accomplished composer who did a lot for choral music. The song itself, as Mark said, has a simple theme with a single word throughout, but there's a section in the middle where things take off - the stretto - where the music tightens and becomes more exciting before it returns to the regular tempo into a thrilling climax. It was incredible to hear all of these magnificent voices so finely tuned to one another - their joy filled the room!
