The Salon Wrap-Up for September 21, 2014 - "The Times of Our Lives"

September 21, 2014
Theme: “The Times of Our Lives”

Our amazing founder and host, Mark Janas, welcomed us to The Salon with some powerful words about the times of our lives. With the recent passing of Joan Rivers and Polly Bergen, Mark reflected on the gifts that being alive brings, and ushered in another magical night on 44th Street. And then he introduced our producer, Tanya Moberly, who gave us a charming rundown on how The Salon works... and then we were off!

Our Co-Host was MAC & Bistro Award Winner Kevin Dozier! Kevin will be a featured performer at QUIET PLEASE THERE’S A LADY ON THE STAGE: A Celebration of Julie Wilson’s 90th Birthday at The 25th Annual Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center - 3 Columbus Circle, NYC 10019 – on October 21st at 6pm. For more information: www.kevindozier.com.

Kevin started the show with a medley of “Sailin’ On” and “On My Way To You.” For his 3-song set at the top of Act II, he sang beautiful renditions of “If I Would Ever Leave You”, “The Journey,” and a medley of “Always” & “Time Heals Everything.” To close the evening, Kevin sang an uplifting, “Bless Your Heart” by Alex Rybeck. (All of these arrangements were done by Alex Rybeck and can be found on Kevin’s latest CD!)

Co-host Kevin Dozier!
Our Salon Spotlight featured MAC Award Nominee Barb Malley & Multiple MAC & Bistro Award Winner Ricky Ritzel! Barb & Ricky will be appearing in EAT! DRINK! BE MERRY! for Cabaret Cares 9 at Roy Arias Studios -  300 West 43rd St, NYC 10036 – on October 25th at 7pm. One night only! For more information: www.barbaramalley.com.

For Barb’s set, she sang an adorable duet with Ricky called, “You’re Timeless To Me”, a touching “Days of Wine and Roses” and closed with a great medley of Jerry Herman songs. Be sure to see this show - it’s for a good cause!

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark Janas Classical Corner started by introducing special guest, Dawn Derow. He thought about the theme, “The Time of Our Lives” and pondered about what many people’s best times have been. For many it was college - for Dawn Derow, who studied opera at Boston Conservatory, it was no exception! To honor her past (and to promote her upcoming show, “Legit” at the Metropolitan Room) Mark invited her to perform several arias, which were incredibly sung and acted! She sang from the operas:

La Boheme (Giacomo Puccini)
Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss)
Old Maid and the Thief (Gian Carlo Menotti)

Dawn’s upcoming show, “Legit” - with musical direction by Mark Janas - is one night only: Friday, September 26, 2014 (9:30pm) at the Metropolitan Room.

The Salon Wrap-Up for September 7, 2014 - "Girl Talk – A Night Of Song Honoring Women”

September 7, 2014
Theme: “Girl Talk – A Night Of Song Honoring Women.”

Mark Janas, sporting a Mona Lisa tie (as an homage to women) kicked off the evening at our balmy and cheerful Salon. Our Co-Host was Doris Dear, with music director Rick Jensen! Doris is here to promote her show, GURL TALK, which is running September 25th (7pm) & October 5th (7pm) at Stage 72 – 158 West 72nd St, NYC 10023. For more information: www.stage72.com. Doris started the show with “I Enjoy being A Girl” with some charming patter to welcome the group, when then segued into “Born to Entertain.” For her 3 song set mid-show, Doris sang “Gimme Gimme”, an intimate and powerful “You’re My World”, and finishing with “Big, Blond & Beautiful.” For the final number of the night, Doris gave us an inspiring “Being Good.”

Co-Host Doris Dear!
Our Salon Spotlight featured Sunny Leigh! Sunny will be celebrating her birthday and her latest CD release at The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC – September 18th at 7pm. For more information: www.metropolitanroom.com. Her set included 3 original songs that she wrote with music director, Barry Levitt.

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark started Classical Corner by talking about the theme for the evening, and wondered how he might honor women in tonight’s segment. He considered profiling female classical composers, but after some thought he realized that there haven’t been many female composers that have been allowed star status like male composers.

He then reminded us that he had a commitment to do more classical improv, and since there were so many talented pianists in the crowd (Rick Jensen, Barry Levitt, Matthew Martin Ward, Bill Zeffiro) that’s what he suggested! He invited the pianist up to riff on any motif or theme that had a central reference to women. One by one the maestros of cabaret came to the piano and waited for their turn - one pianist would play for about 1-1.5 minutes, and then the next pianist would join for a brief 4-handed baton-pass, and then that next pianist took the lead. This went on for about 8-9 minutes, which then culminated in a 5 minute, 4-person improv of “Natural Woman,” which closed the 1st half. The audience leapt to its feet with a rousing standing ovation - you can’t get any better than this, folks!
