The Salon Wrap-Up for March 26, 2018: "Weather or Not"

It was a beautiful, cozy night at The Salon with a full house hungry for some wonderful music! And tonight's singers did not disappoint. With a fantastic theme, "Weather or Not", the crowd was serenaded by young people, stage veterans, cabaret stalwarts, and out-of-town visitors. There was a very special vibe in the room throughout the evening - one of the hallmarks of our community oriented weekly event.

The Co-Host for the evening was Margaret Whiting Award Winner Josephine Sanges! To kick off the evening, Josephine brought us what she called the #1 song of the 20th century, belonging to Harold Arlen - "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." For her midshow set, Josephine commanded the stage (with subtle and smooth backing vocals by John Cook), starting with the swinging and playful, "Satan's Little Lamb." She followed that with a perfect song for her jazz soprano voice - "Gotta Have Me Go With You." She capped the set with what she called a Harold Arlen Nor'easter, a powerful mashup of "Stormy Weather" and "When The Sun Comes Out." The finish off the evening, Josephine sang the finger-snapping and uplifting, "Hip To Be Happy." It was a wonderful collection of songs that had the audience humming along.

Our Co-Host: Josephine Sanges

Josephine will be at The Laurie Beechman Theatre – 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – in COME RAIN OR COME SHINE - JOSEPHINE SANGES SINGS HAROLD ARLEN on April 8th at 7pm. For more information: www.westbankcafe.com/laurie-beechman-theatre / www.josephinesanges.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

For this week's Classical Corner Mark Janas was excited to invite to the stage a student from Manhattan School of Music. He asked her to sing through an impressive and fun project the students are working on - a sung-through musical/opera with book and lyrics crafted using familiar musical theater and opera music as a base. Tonight's lead vocalist, Rachel Querreveld, was joined on backing vocals by Salon sight-readers Adam Shapiro and yours truly (Erin Cronican!) who sang through songs to the tune of "Good Morning Baltimore," "Skid Row," snippets from The Magic Flute, and "Be A Dentist." The audience was having a great time hearing these inventive lyrics! And because she is a student in opera, Mark asked Rachel to stay for to sing one more song, the famed aria from Gianni Schicchi - "O Mio Babbino Caro."

The Salon Wrap-Up for March 18, 2018: "When The Spirit Moves You."

This week's Salon started off with a bang when the choir from St Clement's Church popped up one by one to envelop the audience in the rollicking spiritual, "Righteousness, Peace and Joy." It was a perfect start to the theme of the evening, "When The Spirit Moves You."

Our Co-Host for the evening was Mark Watson! Mark studied opera at Julliard on full scholarship and has performed concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher & Alice Tully Halls, has appeared on National Television and has traveled the world (Japan, Israel, Italy & The Bahamas) winning several International Competitions.

Mark started the evening by bringing his booming baritone to a swinging version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." To kick off his mid show set, he sang the beautiful southern spiritual, "Deep River." He followed that by asking Sarah Rice and David Ballard to join him on voice and flute respectively on a haunting, "In The Bleak Midwinter." He then told a beautiful story about singing at the services of a young cancer patient, and sang for us a song in his memory, "On Eagle's Wings." He finished the evening with a stunning and delicate, "If", a song with the words of Emily Dickinson.

Mark is currently training to become a Registered Rodenburg Teacher - Patsy Rodenburg is a world-famous British voice teacher best known for her work with the greatest classical actors of our time. To prepare for his final set of courses he is offering FREE classes on breath and support. If you would like to participate, you can chat with him at Salon or send him a private message on Facebook.

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight featured longtime Salon regular and fellow Blogette, Sierra Rein! She started her set with an at once hilarious and heartbreaking, "Table 3." She followed that by a delicious honky-tonk number, "Take The Filter Off". She finished the Spotlight with a quote by Quentin Crisp about longterm relationships, segueing into a beautiful and powerful, "By Myself."

Sierra will be at The Laurie Beechman Theatre – 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – in her debut solo cabaret show RUNNING IN PLACE on Thursday, April 12th at 7pm, Sunday, April 29th at 7pm & Saturday, May 12th at 2pm. Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

In honor of St Patrick's Day, Mark dedicated Classical Corner to Celtic music, naming it Celtic Corner. He invited up the incomparable, Sarah Rice, to sing, and started the segment reading descriptions of symbols in tonight's music. A few that were mentioned:

Unicorn - beautiful and healing for all cultures/traditions
Pomegranate - symbol of fertility, life, marriage, rebirth
Four Leaf Clover - each leaf has a meaning: hope, faith, love, luck

The first song was, "Courtyard Lullaby" by Lorenna McKennitt. Sarah's second song was affectionately classified as a typical "dead bride song": "She Moved Through The Fair." For the final song of the segment, Sarah and Mark invited David Ballard to the stage to lend a flute solo to the stunning traditional ballad, "The Voice."

The Salon Wrap-up for March 11, 2018: "Songs That Have Bazazz"

With a Theme like "Songs that Have Bazzaz," it was no wonder the evening was full of energy and spunk. The term "Bazzaz" is from a song Kay Thompson wrote, something to do with joie de vivre, and we had a lot of joyful living on the stage! The joy we felt for each other was also passed on to the memory of the late Dana Lorge, Barry Levitt, and Charlotte Patton, all of whom certainly had bazzaz, and Mark made sure to dedicate the evening's musical joy to them.

The originally scheduled Co-Host Rick Skye was taken ill, so we had the pleasure of having Ann Kittredge as our Replacement Co-Host Extraordinaire, who stepped into Rick's heels for the evening. She was up to the last-minute challenge: "All you need is Pizzaz!" as her dad used to tell her. Well, close enough! Ann is a 2018 MAC Female Debut Nominee, and with her rich soprano and effortless belt (she reminds me of the late Jan Maxwell in look and talent!), coupled with her energetic spirit, she made for a great Co-Host!

Ann began the bazzaz by singing "Everybody Wants to Do a Musical" from Nick and Nora, and expertly threw in a little Rocky Horror Picture Show and South Pacific as well. For the second act set, Broadway pianist Larry Yurman took over for Mark at the piano to play for Ann. She began in a lilting French with the waltz "Chanson." from The Baker's Wife by Stephen Schwartz, and cleverly got the audience to sing the "la la la" section of "Sing a Song" to end it! She then opened up her tender side to croon "Strangest Thing" from Kander and Ebb's The Act, showing off her rich mix and supple, fully-controlled voice. She continued with the Kander and Ebb theme with "And the World Goes Round," starting in a deep alto and then rising into end in a fiery belt. At the end of the evening, Ann graciously returned at the end of the evening to encourage support, love and musical joy within our community, and then left us with the hilariously frantic "The Last Song." And indeed, it was!

Ann Kittredge
You can see why Ann was nominated for a MAC Award by seeing "Another Night Only" on Monday, March 19th at 7pm - directed by Richard Jay-Alexander with music direction by Larry Yurman, at The Laurie Beechman Theatre,  407 West 42nd St, NYC.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

When Mark considered the concept of bazzaz, he interpreted it as music that inherently contained an "outward kind of drama," pieces with sharp corners and interesting colors, stops and starts, fits and spurts of dramatic flair to its personality. So he found a piece with a lot of sparkle, "MalagueƱa" by Ernesto Lecuona. Mark played this solo on the piano, and one could hear the fireworks and raging waters within its Spanish tonalities and flowing melodies.

Then Mark brought to light the ultimate lady with bazzaz, the titular heroine of Carmen. Janice Hall sang the ultimate aria from this ultimate opera, "Habanera." The Habanera rhythm itself emerged from an African rhythm, and once it came through the island of Cuba, it eventually became the Tango. Carmen the opera was written in French but takes place in Spain, and the "Habanera" aria took advantage of the combination of the romantic French language of "l'amour" with the hot, sensual pulse of this Afro-inspired rhythm. In this piece, Carmen (a seductress in every sense of the word), sings about a rebellious bird; one cannot control it, just like one cannot control Love. In her rendition, Janice made us all feel the heat of Spain and the flutter of the wings of love equally.

Mark then brought Dawn Derow to the stage, to sing "Glitter and Be Gay" from Candide, a parody of the Old Operetta English Form, but with a Bernstein twist. You can hear opera, musical theater, and English Operetta modes all mixed into this one piece. as it is one of the more infamous coloratura songs in modern operatic-infused works. Dawn opened up by lying prostrate on the piano in abject disgust of being in "Paris, Fraaaaaaaaance!" but ended up at the end of the song with as many twinkles in her eye as on her diamond bracelets.
