The Salon Wrap-Up for August 28, 2016 - "Bernstein – 98 and Still Great!"

Mark Janas opened up the 98th Birthday Celebration of his friend Leonard Bernstein - "Bernstein - 98 and Still Great!" - bringing up a different story from past Salon events to regale us with. Sporting a West Side Story tee from a production he did a long time ago, Mark told us about Bernstein's conducting job in Vienna and his rivalry with German conductor Karajan (and the German gentleman's neurosis about his height, which Bernstein seemed to use as a sticking point).

Julie Reyburn returned once again to Co-Host this evening, being one of the best emotional interpreters of Bernstein I've ever heard. For 17 years she has been Mark's creative partner, winner of almost every cabaret and solo performer award in New York City, and a wonderfully powerful mother and businesswoman. Julie started the evening and brought the energy up by exploding onto the stage with the ebullient "Tonight" from West Side Story. To open the second set, Tanya Moberly once again took on the mantle of Anita to sing some sense into Julie's Maria with "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love" from West Side Story. Next came a mashup of "Build Me a House," cut from Bernstein's Peter Pan, and Jerome Kern's "The Folks Who Live on a Hill." She then ranted and raved her way again through the epic "Trouble in Tahiti" from the show of the same name, backed up by the Island Magic vocalists Mark, myself and David Ballard. To finish up the evening, we went back to On The Town to hear Julie sing the sweetly bitter "Some Other Time" with Janice, David, Mark and Sierra (me!) singing backup.

Julie Reyburn will perform at the Cabaret Convention on October 19th, 2016 at 6pm at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall, Broadway at West 60th Street, NYC.

Classical Corner

Bernstein's work is often discordant, jazzy and requiring of much concentration on rhythms, breaths, and gorgeous reaches, so Mark and violinist Bradley Bosenbeck had their work cut out for them: to perform a piano-violin duet by Bernstein called "Serenade for Solo Violin and String Orchestra", and they did so with gorgeous heart and soaring notes. Isaac Stern introduced this piece - which is inspired by Plato's Symposiumto audiences in 1954. In this 5-movement concerto, Bernstein strove to create extra music to tie everything to an accounting of a real discussion on what love means. Echoes of musical lines and playing between ideas are part of this work, almost like a musical portrayal. The second movement even quotes music from a previously composed anniversary work (pieces written for different people for their birthday) and dealt with the mythology of Aristophanes - he thought that we used to be four-legged, two-headed beings until the Gods split us in half, and we are merely trying to find our other half in love. Bernstein composed this search lovingly, and Mark and Brad played tenderly. They skipped the Third Movement, which was "waaaaaay too f****** hard" for them to tackle, so they moved to the Fourth Movement - Agathon's - a gloriously lyric piece about the true nature of love. The last movement of Symposium contains a reprise of the Agathon movement, signifying a powerful speech which is suddenly interrupted by a band of people who bring in wine and make a party. They played a bit of this insanely complicated romp through rhythms and notes, and the entire audience whooped as much as if they were at the same party!

Mark then invited Zach Wobensmith and the "Short Notice Singers" Julie Reyburn, Sierra Rein, Janice Hall and David Ballard to join on stage to sing through "To what you said..." a song heard in the overture of Bernstein's musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but which in its full version is often said to be a "coming out" song, with a pulsing middle C that makes its way throughout the entire piece.

Special Note: In attendance was Heather Bobeck, who coached with some of Lennie's original notes and demands of the part, sang on Mark's request a pitch-perfect rendition of "Glitter and Be Gay" with stunningly precise vocals, hilarious and real honest laughter, and high notes that ran down the spine. Brava!

The Salon Wrap-Up for August 21, 2016 - "Salon's 11th Anniversary"

It's a wonderful night for some music - and for an anniversary party!

My first time at The Salon was way back when it was at the Algonquin Hotel. Karen Mason hosted, and I was absolutely smitten. And now here we are, an energetic 11 years old - the time flew by but at the same time some things never change. We're still gathering week after week, an artistic family that meet in a place that many of us consider "home." It was wonderful to see so many loving faces - some I know very well from our many years together, and some I've only just met and hope that I will know better in 11 year's time.

Mark Janas kicked off the evening by greeting the full room and bringing up his partner in crime, Tanya Moberly to tell the guests how the evening would go. She also unveiled a sweet gift for each of our guests - a magnet embossed with our logo, with the anniversary date commemorated on the back!

Thank you to David Gillam for these lovely magnets!
Our Co-Hosts were the The Etceterettes, including Erin Cronican (me!), Shana Farr, Kathleen France, Janice Hall, Marnie Klar, Candice Oden, Sierra Rein, Sarah Rice, Adam B Shapiro, Maureen Taylor & Zach Wobensmith (unable to attend: Dawn Derow, Lorinda Lisitza & Jaye Maynard).

Our Host Mark Janas (seated L), Producer Tanya Moberly (seated R) and Etceterettes!

We were so humbled to have been honored with white roses, given to us by longtime Salon member Mary Lahti. Thank you for making us all feel extra special, Mary!

Here's a little run down of the songs our co-hosts sang:

Kathleen France started the evening with a strong and sassy, "Ain't That a Kick In The Head." See below for information about her upcoming show at the Iridium.

Marnie Klar got people snapping with a luxurious, "Fever."  See below for information about her upcoming show at Don't Tell Mama.

Maureen Taylor charmed us with her beautiful soprano, lilting, "Our Children" from Ragtime. See her next at the Cabaret Convention!

Candice Oden brought the house down with her smooth and tender, "This Time Around."

I, Erin Cronican, sang "What Makes Me Love Him" from The Apple Tree. (I can't very well give myself a review, can I??) See below for an announcement about an upcoming appearance with Maureen Taylor at the Triad.

To serve both her solo and tonight's special Classical Corner, Shana Farr brought in an amazing Gilbert and Sullivan song, "The Hours Creep On Apace" from HMS Pinafore. You can see her next performing at the Cabaret Convention and a tribute show for Barbara Cook.

Sierra Rein sang a firecracker of an arrangement of "Come On To My House" - she was smokin' and the room was rockin'! See below for news about her group, Marquee Five.

Janice Hall sang one of my favorite songs in her repertoire, a delightfully dry and sexy, "The Laziest Gal in Town." See below for Janice's next show, an encore performance of her Marlena Dietrich show at the Metropolitan Room.

Zach Wobensmith sang a stunning song (with even more stunning performance) from Urban Cowboy called, "I Take It Back."

And to close out the evening, Adam B Shapiro brought back an amazing song he wrote especially for The Salon (which was his first foray into writing!) - "The Etceterette Song."

The Salon Wrap-Up for August 14, 2016 - "Six Degrees of Stephen Schwartz"

Singer Kelli Rabke has had a long association with the music of Stephen Schwartz, beginning with Paper Mill Playhouse's production of Children of Eden, in which she played Yonah. She also made her Broadway debut as the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and recently performed a Schwartz show, "The Wizard and I," at 54 Below. So, she was a natural for tonight's theme. Host Mark Janas introduced her after telling his own "Six Degrees of Stephen Schwartz" story (which involved the Clintons!), and she opened the show with a three-song set, featuring the fabulous Sean Harkness on guitar. Their first song was "Corner of the Sky," from Schwartz's first Broadway show, Pippin. Then, from the mega-hit "Wicked," Sean and Kelli performed a ballad-y, "unplugged" version of "Defying Gravity," which gave the song a whole new feel and color, and gave Sean a chance to display his virtuosity.  For her third song, Kelli, chose Yonah's beautiful farewell from Children of Eden, "Stranger to the Rain." After the break, Kelli gave us what we were all waiting for: a terrifically funny version of "Popular" from Wicked. And to close out the evening, she gifted us with an intense rendition of the iconic "Meadowlark," from The Baker's Wife.

Salon Spotlight: Gregory Harrell
Producer Tanya Moberly introduced our Salon Spotlight artist, her old friend and colleague (from The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Gregory Harrell.  Harrell is now a voice professor, living in Ohio, but has returned to the Big Apple to do his first cabaret show on Monday, August 15th, at Don't Tell Mama.. Together with his accompanist, Bryan Wade, he performed three sensational numbers, beginning with  "A Man Could Go Quite Mad," from Drood.  For his second song, he changed the mood, and gave us a reflective reading of the classic ballad "Secret Love." He closed his set with Kander and Ebb's "Kiss of the Spider Woman."www.gregoryharrell.com

 Quick Wrap: Classical Corner:
Mark introduced his friend Tristan Cano, who performed a classical piano improvisation for the audience. Such improvisations on classical themes were popular in the past, but in the twentieth century, they were eclipsed by the new art of jazz improvisation. Tristan aims to revive this neglected musical form. His presentation was not of the "theme and variations" variety, with a structure and a set form, but rather, a stream of consciousness journey through the music of various composers (including Ravel, Wagner, Rachmaninov, and Brahms). He wove the different pieces and styles together seamlessly, also inserting a few contemporary musical fragments into the mix, just to make sure we were paying attention.

To set the mood, host Mark Janas opened the show with a tale of how he struck a blow for independence and broke the dress code at his high school when HE was young.

Marcus Goldhaber then put us in the proper musical mood with his jazzy, joyous rendition of one of Frank Sinatra's big hits, "You Make Me Feel So Young."
To open the second half of the evening, Dawn Derow gave us a moving take on Adele's "When We Were Young," followed by Marcus, singing the beautiful Harold Arlen/ YIP Harburg standard,"Last Night WhenWe Were Young." The two closed out their segment with a touching duet, "I'd Give it All for You," from Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World.
Dawn closed out a most enjoyable evening with the sweetest interpretation of Dar Williams's story-song, "The Babysitter's Here."

Salon Spotlight: Blake Zolfo

New York cabaret newbie Blake Zolfo will be doing his first solo show, "Happily Ever After*(see footnote)," at the Metropolitan Room on August 10th.  Tonight, he gave us a taste of what's in store for his lucky audience. His premise for the show is the contrast between fairy tales and real life, and, to illustrate, he opened with a reflective "Fight the Dragons," from the musical Big Fish. He changed the mood (and era) with a classic rendition of "Taking A Chance on Love." Then, Blake asked Salon regular Steve Schalchlin to join Mark Janas, and together they sang backup for Blake's closing number, the humorous, 1920's-style "Stuck on You," from the 1993 musical, Whoop-Dee-Doo.

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner:

In keeping with tonight's theme, Mark talked about the musical selections that young piano and voice students learn.  He took a show of hands from those present to illustrate that there are certain pieces that almost everyone learns, and he discussed what those pieces teach about technique.
Then, Mark invited audience members to play a piece they learned in their youth. First up was Matthew Martin Ward, who played the familiar "Sonatina," by Clementi.  In contrast, Annie Lebeaux picked a piece by Bela Bartok, which, as she said, "threw you a curve, and opened up the whole world of Eastern European music." Richie Eisenberg gave us his rendition of a jazzy patriotic medley he learned back in the day from his uncle, professional cocktail pianist Ray Cohen.
Mark closed with a lovely rendition of a piece almost every piano student has played at one time or another, Beethoven's "Fuer Elise."

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 31, 2016 - "Yearning For More"

Mark Janas began last night's Salon with an RIP to Marni Nixon, who was on everyone's mind as a major loss to the Broadway and Musical Theater community. She was even some audience members' personal friend and teacher, so lots of love and emotion on Marni's passing was felt.

To complement this, the theme was the heart-pulling and bittersweet "Yearning For More," but we couldn't ask for more with Guest Co-Host Sandra Bargman, who has worked on Broadway, National Tours, Cruise Ships, Cabaret...you name it...and is a songwriter to boot! With Ian Herman at the piano, she started out with the glorious ballad "On A Clear Day" with powerhouse vocals. For her Act II set, Sandra bellowed and cakewalked through "Great Big Baby." Her next tune was the quintessential yearning song, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen. She then brought her bluesy songwriting skills (and soulful vocals to boot) to her song "Don't Call It Spirits For Nothin'." Her final song of the evening was "I Can See Clearly Now," sung in a a driven train-track rhythm'd piano, expertly played by Ian Herman.

Sandra Bargman
Sandra Bargman will be in "Shakin' It Real!" in a CD release party of "The Edge of Every Day" at The Metropolitan Room on September 18th, at 4:00 pm.

Salon Spotlight: Kathleen Turner

Kathleen Turner
Um, so...yeah...Kathleen Turner. With her signature voice, beauty, acerbic wit and slew of starring roles in movies and television titles a mile long, it was no wonder we were thrilled to have her as our Salon Spotlight that Sunday evening! She brought her sultry tones and twinkles in her eyes first to the lilting "Let's Fall in Love" by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. She then went into a song she has always loved, "Since I Fell For You" (originally written by Buddy Johnson in 1945). Kathleen then admitted she always wanted to sing in New York since her youth, but never thought she'd ever be a "soprano," and so she went into acting...and it turned out pretty well for her. She finished her set with the wistfully positive "You Must Believe in Spring" by Bill Evans, and made us all yearn for a full set of songs sometime in the near future!

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner:

The word for "yearning" brought up to Mark a multitude of meanings, from the lyrics and the melody of Bernstein's "Somewhere" to the melody of the Theme to "Gone With the Wind" - in these songs, there's a reaching in the octave jump, a look toward another land or another love or another life. Mark brought in a friend: David Shenton is as talented on piano as he is on violin, and accompanied Mark on violin on Chopin's Prelude in E minor, which features a high reaching arches that complement the feeling of loss, with stretched long notes and melodic falls in the bass notes. Distant harmonies create a feeling of things kept apart (and David even sang a few notes of "How Insensitive," showing off what parts of the melody Antônio Carlos Jobim lovingly homaged).

Mark then brought out an arrangement of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings for David and himself of this piece - an elegy which has harmonies and dissonances that resolve into growing climaxes of volume. It's an intense string sound when the orchestra in full plays, but David's beautiful sustaining notes communicated the aching quality of the song in perfect, painfully gorgeous ways. When David's violin reached a high sustained note in a long forte, the audience seemed to hold its breath, and was only allowed to release it when the violin dropped to a lower note and continued, itself heartbroken.

Mini-Classical Corner Alert! I have to mention that David Shenton and his wife, Erin Shields, performed in the second act, one right after the other. On the piano, David performed a ridiculous (and I mean, ridiculous) improv on the song "All of Me" after the audience yelled out a few composers at him, but then topped himself in ridiculous talent by doing his own breakdown of the same song on BOTH PIANO AND VIOLIN AT THE SAME TIME (you can see a similar performance here). It brought about a standing O and several prostrated bows of admiration from the audience. But then, Erin came up to the stage and, in a full and gorgeous soprano, sang "Al Di La." in both English and Italian. That household has so much talent, it's ridiculous. Ridiculous.

David and Erin, along with Giuseppe Spoletini, have a trio group called "O Sole Trio" at the Highline Ballgame August 14th at 12:30 pm and then will tour the Midwest in September and October.
