The Salon Wrap-Up for January 26, 2014 - "Make 'Em Laugh: Parody, Satire & Humor"

January 26, 2014
Theme: “Make ‘Em Laugh: Parody, Satire and Humor”

Mark Janas kicked off the evening talking about the humble beginnings of Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. For some reason, when it first was previewed by audiences, the audience did not laugh at all (even though the show was funny.) Sondheim thought on it and decided to place “Comedy Tonight” at the beginning of the show. Once the audience was reminded that it was a comedy, they laughed and continued to do so throughout the show. Mark shared that lesson with us and, thus, gave us permission to laugh heartily throughout tonight’s show!

Our Co-Host was Bistro Award Winner Nathan Chang! Nathan will be bringing STEPPIN’ OFF THE SIDEWALK back to Don’t Tell Mama – 343 West 46th St, NYC 10036 – February 7th at 7:30pm. For more information: www.donttellmama.com

Our Salon Spotlight featured Multiple MAC & Bistro Award Winner Laurie Krauz! Laurie will be bringing TAPESTRY REWOVEN back to The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC 10010 – with The Daryl Kojak Octet January 31st at 7pm. For more information: www.metropolitanroom.com

Sneak Peek: Classical Corner

Mark announced that tomorrow, January 27, is the 258th Anniversary of Mozart’s birth. In keeping with the theme, Mark revealed that Mozart was actually quite a cut-up. On the one hand, he was pristine about his songwriting - his handwritten scores were impeccably written (as opposed to others like Beethoven who had scribbles and scratches all over the page.) On the other hand, he wrote incredibly base and inflammatory lyrics to a few of his songs. Mark got his hands on one and read the lyrics to us - really hilarious!

For the first part of the Classical Corner performance, he invited up Zach Wobensmith, Adam Shapiro, and Matthew Martin Ward to perform a round. First, they sang in unison so we could get a sense of the song. And then Mark led them in an impressive round where the pieces of the verses matched up beautifully no matter who was singing what - such wonderful harmonies! And most impressive, this perfect round of singing was done with only one run-through rehearsal right before The Salon!

For the second part of Classical Corner - Mark invited tonight’s Co-Host Nathan Chang to the stage to play a piano/clarinet duet of the exposition from the 1st movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto!

To close the segment out, Mark recounted one of the best piano lessons he had ever had. His teacher asked him, “What do you do when you learn a new piece?” Mark told her that after learning the piece and committing it to memory, he sits at the piano and decided how he wants to interpret the song. She responded, “What I do is learn the notes, get my technique connected to the song, get ‘off the page’ and then sit and wait ... and then play the piece very simply to see what the piece wants to do with me.” Mark said that perhaps we as singers might like to try that at some point in our song development and see what happens. I like that idea. :)

A few things you may find different from The Salon Blog in 2014. Here is an update regarding a few structural changes which will take place on the blog starting in 2014.

From now on, the blog will take a more streamlined approach to encapsulate what each Salon night entailed. It will now simply state what the Theme was, who Co-Hosted, who was the Salon Spotlight, what Classical Corner was about and then will list the performing members that were in attendance that night. Below that will be a list of the upcoming shows of ONLY the people who attended that evening. The Blogette of each evening will still be at the door to collect monies but will take minimal notes - so make sure he or she has all song and show information written on the signup cards when you fill it out. Sneak Peek: Classical Corner

For this week’s Classical Corner Mark Janas talked about the importance of time in music. Obviously, when learning to play music you’ve learn that pitch goes up and down, and time goes left and right. (He also mentioned something about learning what those pesky little markings are on the page... notes?) :)

Mark said that music moves through time in a way that we can’t hold onto. You can’t freeze a moment of it, it’s always moving even when being sustained. In the earliest days humans were aware of rhythm (it’s in our nature, after all - think about the ancient drum circles) but the idea of pitch came later. When conductors lead their orchestras, there can be drastic differences in tempo depending on the person with the baton. And their preferences for tempos can change over the years - Mark recounted how Leonard Bernstein’s tempo got slower as he got older, not because he was getting tired (or bored) but because he was savoring it (maybe youths are more excitable and thus have faster tempos?) Mark also said that musical pieces have changed and moved through time, depending on the era that they’re played in.

Mark demonstrated how to pick out a rhythm by playing a piece of music from Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and than having the audience repeat the rhythm & tempo by clapping what they heard. He then demonstrated that there’s not only a melodic rhythm but also a harmonic rhythm.

In keeping with his New Year’s resolution to compose more often (and noting that composing includes improvisation_)Mark decided to do an improvised “variation” on an old traditional sarabande (of spanish origin) called La Folia de Espana (The Folly of Spain.) Mark says that sarabande’s have a distinctive chord, harmonic, rhythmic progression that makes it good for traditional Spanish dancing. Mark invited Matthew Martin Ward to the piano to jump in at anytime to take over the variation, and the improvisation ensued! Their song featured a middle section with a brilliant 2-person, 4-handed improvisation, and the rest of the time they traded off solos without missing a beat. Classical Corner truly is one of the most unique and exciting programs in the city (I swear, I am not biased!)

Sneak Peek: Classical Corner

For this week’s Classical Corner Mark introduced us to the Polonaise. Polonaise is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a stately Polish processional dance popular in 19th century Europe.” Probably the most popular/famous polonaise is the Grand Polonaise, which is well known for a repeated figure that has a military-style marching feel (with an even faster repeat in the refrain.)

Mark mused that he didn’t know how long he’d known the song, but he knew that he played it in his high school talent show (I would have loved to have seen that!) With that, he played it for us tonight - Chopin’s Grand Polonaise in A Flat.

Thank you!

The Salon Wrap-Up for January 5, 2014 - "Reaching Goals – From Resolution To Reality"

The Salon 2014 Opener
January 5, 2014
Theme: “Reaching Goals – From Resolution To Reality”

Our Co-Host was Multiple Award Winner Richard Skipper! Accompanying Richard on the piano for the evening was Christine Talbott-Sutin (plus a special introduction by Bryon Sommers.)

Co-Host Richard Skipper (left!)
Sneak Peek: Classical Corner

Mark kicked off tonight’s Classical Corner “with a little something” on the piano. When he asked the audience what the piece was, no one could guess. And that’s because Mark improvised it! Mark’s resolution is to compose more, and he said that much of composing includes a little bit of improvisation. (Have you ever wondered where Schubert’s “Impromptu”s came from?)

So, how do you organize improvisation for the piano? Mark gave us a couple of ideas: Theme. Pattern. Chord structure. Meter. And Pianist “ornaments” - the things you know you have in your repertoire as an artist that you can pull out and know will be successful.

With that Mark, invited all of the composers in the room to come to the piano to improvise to the theme, “Auld Lang Syne.” And one by one, the pianists improvised and then handed off the keys without skipping a beat. First was Mark, then Matthew Martin Ward, then Christian Talbott-Sutin, then Bryon Sommers. The song culminated in a 4-person/8-handed finale, which received a huge standing ovation from the crowd. HAPPY NEW YEAR to our Salon family!

The evening begins at 7:00, has a 15-minute break at 8:30 and ends promptly at 10:30. If you would like to sign up to perform, see one the evening's 'Etceterettes' to fill out a card with your name, the name of your song, whether or not Mark will be playing for you and any upcoming events you'd like to promote. We do not present performers in order of sign-up, however, indicating requests as clearly and as early as possible as far as time restraints are concerned always makes everything much more possible. ALWAYS BRING SEVERAL SONG SELECTIONS to avoid duplication. All types of material, on or off theme are always welcome at Salon. We enthusiastically welcome instrumentalists, poets, playwrights, essayists, comics, illusionists and performance artists. Please limit your selections to three or four minutes in length (including introductions). Please also bring clear, complete charts for Mark to read.
