The Salon Wrap-Up for July 29th, 2018: "Taking a Chance on Love"

Co-Host, Emily Ellet

Tonight was a relatively small house; on the plus side, however, there were opportunities for encore performances, which are always welcome. Our co-host for this week was the lovely Emily Ellet, winner of the 2017 MetroStar Talent Challenge.

In keeping with the theme "Taking A Chance On Love," and accompanied by the wonderful Jeff Cubeta, Emily opened the evening with "The Life I've Never Led" from the musical "Sister Act." Her set after the break included Maltby and Shire's "Sunday Crossword Puzzle," followed by a quiet, conversational and heartfelt rendition of Sondheim's "Being Alive" and ending with "Man Wanted" from Barry Manilow's "Copacabana." Emily closed out the evening with "My Foolish Heart," that favorite old standard. You can see Emily's show "Uncharted" at The Triad on Friday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark, joined by Matthew Martin Ward, presented a four-hands piano version of Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Overture Fantasy." Mark remarked on how although Tchaikovsky's piece doesn't follow the exact timeline of the story, nonetheless it captures the various moods by use of three main themes. The first is a chorale, evocative of Friar Lawrence and his unwitting role as catalyst for the ultimate tragedy. The second represents the combat between the two warring families, with the cymbals in the orchestration (with exclamatory onomatopoeia by Mark in lieu of an orchestral percussion section) representative of swords clashing. The third is the love theme, perhaps the tune most often identified with the piece. All themes are interwoven and alternated, building and culminating into the suicide of the two lovers. The battle theme recaps, then turns into a dirge, as the piece closes with a final allusion to the love theme and ends with a dramatic, unison tone. Mark also mentioned how, as Tchaikovsky was secretly gay, the concept of "forbidden love" may have resonated greatly; it has been suggested that his death may have actually been a suicide. Some evidence of this torment may have been detected by his mentor Mily Balakirev who, upon hearing the love theme, wrote Tchaikovsky a letter stating that hearing it made him want to "give him a hug."

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 22th, 2018: "Contradictions"

Co-Host, David Hajdu

Our Salon co-host tonight was David Hajdu--music critic, professor, journalist, and author of numerous books about music and popular culture, including "Lush Life: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn."  David also happens to be married to cabaret favorite Karen Oberlin, and is a prolific lyricist. Throw all that into the mix, along with his three ASCAP Awards, and you get a terrifically interesting, knowledgeable, and polished host for the evening's festivities. David opened with an anecdote from his youth, about when he received the gift of a haircut from world-famous stylist Vidal Sassoon. He dryly remarked that, until tonight, that was his greatest Salon experience.

In 2015,"Waiting for the Angel," the first CD of songs featuring David's lyrics, was released by Miranda Music, and has won numerous awards. David brought along some of his favorite singers to give us a taste of that CD, all accompanied by brilliant Jon Weber. The show opened with the lovely Marissa Mulder giving us a finely calibrated rendition of the wistful "The Angel in the Attic "  Marissa's second song featured music by the late songwriter Mickey Leonard. It was a lullaby written in honor of David and Karen's son, called "Lullaby for Nathan Charles."

After the break, David introduced his son, Emory Hajdu, to sing the quirky song "The Girl in the Grocery Box." Then, David introduced Emory's mother, Karen Oberlin, to sing the touching ballad "Good Things Happen Slowly." Salon producer Tanya Moberly also jumped on the Hajdu bandwagon, singing the Hajdu-Jill Sobule song "I Still Feel the Same," which sounded as if it could have been written especially for her. Karen Oberlin closed the show with a beautiful song about yearning and connection, "All But You."

Quick Wrap - Cook's Corner

Our host  and principal pianist for the evening, John Cook, took over the Classical Corner slot, and, in honor of the ninetieth anniversary of George Gershwin's first trip to Paris, he played one of Gershwin's three published Preludes, first performed in 1926.
John noted that, while we all acknowledge the influence of jazz and gospel idioms in Gershwin's music, less obvious is the influence of French classical composers such as Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. John played a segment from Debussy's "Golliwog's Cakewalk," and then played what he called Gershwin's answer to this piece, another of the Preludes.

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 15th, 2018: "Something Cool"

When I was a kid, Summer was so much fun
Playing and laughing all day in the sun
We would all gather for a game of tag
Or running a race to the finish flag

We would think of ways to try and stay cool
Like going for a swim at the public pool
Drinking tall glasses of cold lemonade
While sitting under a tree in the crisp shade

Riding our bikes up and down the street
And waiting for the ice cream truck, so we could buy our treat
Staying up late with my best friend
Hoping that Summer would never end

I'm grown up now but it's just not the same
The loss of innocence is such a shame
It's been a long time but they're still  very clear
Those summertime memories that I hold so dear

And another awesome night of music and magic is upon us!

We had a wonderful night this week.  We didn't have a big house, but we had more than enough talent and heart to fill the room.  Our co-host for this week was the wonderful Joan Jaffe!  She started the night by singing about that heat (the weather kind) and romance (the heartbreaking kind) in tonight's theme song "Something Cool,"  and followed it with a song her father used to sing, "Mississippi Mud."  Her next song was the fabulous Sondheim work "Anyone Can Whistle." She started the second set with one of Blossom Dearie's songs, "Rhode Island is Famous For You," and closed the evening with the hilarious Memory spoof -- performed only the way the fabulous Joan Jaffe can.  Joan will be performing "Something Cool" on Saturday, July 21st, at 7pm at Pangea, 178 2nd Ave, NYC.  She also has a recurring role on this season of "Orange Is The New Black," which is now airing on Netflix.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Modulation (my favorite thing in the world) was the focus for the night.  In popular music, they usually go up half a step.  In classical pieces, however, a modulation can often be found within the piece.  Mark talked about the circle of fifths - which is going a fifth at a time up or down the keyboard -- which was used a lot by Bach, and Mark demonstrated it with Bach's "C minor Prelude."  Pivot chords are frequently used for modulations.  That is a new chord that has something (a note) in common with the earlier chord. Mark then demonstrated that by playing a portion of Mozart's "C major Sonata."  He also talked about the chromatic scale (in which every note is played), as opposed to the diatonic scale and gave several wonderful examples.  Matthew Martin Ward joined us toward the end to show us other examples of modulations by playing Schumann's "Widmung."
