The Salon Wrap-Up November 23, 2014 - "That Holiday Feeling"

November 23, 2014
Theme: “That Holiday Feeling”

It's the week of Thanksgiving, so what better way to kick off the season than to bring in cabaret's favorite holiday duo!

Tonight’s Co-Hosts were Bistro Award Winner Edd Clark & 3-Time MAC Award Winner Sue Matsuki! SUE & EDD’S FABULOUS CHRISTMAS will be at Don’t Tell Mama – 343 West 46th St, NYC 10036 – on December 4th at 7pm & December 7th at 3pm. For more information: www.eddclark.com / www.suematsuki.com

Edd and Sue kicked off the evening with a rousing duet, “That Holiday Feeling” (so THAT’S how they got the theme!) For their mid-show set, Sue started with the country inspired tune, “I Know What Santa’s Getting for Christmas” (with some assistance from the audience!) She and Edd continued with a touching medley of “After the Holiday” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” To close the set, Edd sang a lively, “The Very Best Time of Year.” At the end of the night, Edd and Sue gave us a bossa-nova-esque “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” (which Mark Janas capped with one more verse to that the audience could sing along.) The holidays are upon us, and we are cheered! :)

Co-Hosts Edd Clark and Sue Matsuki
Our Salon Spotlight featured the talented songwriter and performer, Robert Yarnall (with pianist Fred Thaler and special guest, Salon Charter Member, Kristin Maloney!) Robert will be appearing in YARNALL DESIRES at The Laurie Beechman Theater – 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – on December 1st at 7pm. For more information: www.robertyarnall.com

For his first song, Robert brought us a hilarious, “Why Would I Ever (Come Back)” as the character, Jesus. His second song was the powerful and uplifting, “Making the Most of My Day.” To close the set, Robert asked Kristin Maloney to come up to sing his original tune, “Changing” (which was inspired by the movie, “Pleasantville.”) It was such a beautiful song, and wonderfully delivered by Kristin.

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

When Mark Janas thought about this week’s classical corner, he knew he wanted to play Brahms. So he contacted one of his favorite violinists, Bradley Bosenbeck, and asked him if he happened to like Brahms sonatas. Bradley said he loved them, and the performance was made!

The chose to play parts of Brahms Sonata in D Minor, chamber music which Mark called “gypsy.” They started by playing a little of the opening to illustrate how the themes and structure impact the music. Mark and Bradley then played through the 1st movement to roaring applause. Mark then teased us by saying that he would, someday, play through the rest of the piece but for now they would play some snippets from Movement 2 and Movement 3 to let us know what’s in store. It was stunning! But at the last moment Mark relented and let us all hear the last movement of the piece - powerful, moving and chilling. What a treat!

The Salon Wrap-Up November 9, 2014 - "Happiness Is..."

November 9, 2014
Theme: “Happiness Is...”

To start the evening, Salon founder and host, Mark Janas, asked the audience to share shows they’d seen recently that made them happy. (Among them, Ben Rimalower and Adam Shapiro were lauded!)

Tonight’s Co-Host was Marnie Klar. Marnie will be doing her final performance of HOME with Steven Ray Watkins, Matt Scharfglass & Terese Genecco at Don’t Tell Mama – 343 West 46th St, NYC 10036 – on November 12th at 9:30pm. For more information: www.marnieklar.com

For the first song of the evening, Marnie sang a fun yet poignant, “Lying.” In her mid-show set, she gave us a tender and heartfelt, “What Do I Do?” She followed that with “Consequence of Sounds” by Regina Spektor (with “percussion” by Mark Janas) and “100 Years” by Five for Fighting. She closed the show with the incredible audience pleaser, “Happy” (by Pharrell) with backup singers Mark Janas, Janice Hall, and yours truly. :)

Co-Host Marnie Klar
Our Salon Spotlight featured MAC, Bistro & Nightlife Award Winner Carolyn Montgomery-Forant! Carolyn will be at The Laurie Beechman Theater – 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – in VISIBLE PHOENIX November 21st, December 22nd, March 13th, April 10th & May 8th. All shows at 7pm. For more information: www.carolynmontgomeryforant.com

Carolyn started her set with a very touching, “Make Me a Kite.” Her next song was a charming, original piece, “Lady Phoenix.” She finished with another original song, inspired by the infamous posters that hung in gyms across the nation which pictured two differently-sized women and the question, “Would you rather be a mermaid or a whale?” I’m so glad that someone is taking this topic on in a fun (and direct) way. It's sorely needed (no pun intended!)

Salon Spotlight Carolyn Montgomery-Forint
Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark started out by saying, “So... happy? (and then played a bit of “Happy Talk” from South Pacific.) He mentioned that today is the anniversary of two historic events - 25 years ago (1989) the Berlin Wall fell, and Mark played a bit from Beethoven’s 9th in commemoration. The 2nd event was not quite a “happy” - the anniversary of Kristallnacht (Crystal Night), a night when throughout Germany & Austria the military action was so intense that broken glass was strewn across the city. It’s rumored that the evening left 91 dead, 30 committed suicides, and 30,000 arrested, but Mark thinks that numbers may be much higher.

What do either of these things have to do with happiness? Mark talked about how music is something that is drawn forth from musicians/composers and can be a way to find solace. He mentioned the French composer Olivier Messiean, who was arrested and thrown into a concentration camp. Even that could not stop him from composing - he wrote a song for the only 4 in their possession: piano, violin, cello, clarinet - “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” (or Quartet for the End of Time) - which was first performed in the concentration camp for prisoners and the guards.

Next, Mark started talking about what makes music sound happy:

1) Major chords
He talked about how one kind of one chord can sound universally happy, which all comes down to the physics of sounds - overtones. When you play a string, you hear 2 octaves and a 3rd note (which is the 5th, in the middle.) his chord is intrinsic to sound - every single sound has a major chord

2) Minor chords
Minor chords sound sad because of the tension - hidden within in a minor chord is the major chord which creates dissonance.

Modes - Mark talked about how the Greeks really started exploring chords and their structure, and these chords ended up with Greek names (Ionian, Dorian, etc)

3) Tempo and Articulation
Mark talked about the term ”allegro” which indicates a fast, peppy, bright tempo and literally means “cheerful” in Italian. A song’s tempo and articulation can give “happy” music a sense of bounciness and ebullient.

A few tunes that Mark played as examples:

Prelude in C major (Bach - Ave Maria)
Butterfly Etude (Chopin)
E minor Prelude (Chopin)
Raindrop Prelude - inspired by the patter of rain on a windowsill (Chopin)

To close the night, Mark mentioned that Keys and Mood of the composition also make a big difference. He encouraged the singers to think about all of these areas as they construct their shows.

The Salon Wrap-Up for November 2, 2014 - "Love Takes Many Forms"

November 2, 2014
Theme: “Love Takes Many Forms”

To open the evening, Founder/Host Mark Janas burst to the stage and said, “Love Takes Many Forms? More like TALENT takes many forms!” What better way to start this kind of evening with a little bit of love?! Mark then introduced our amazing Producer, Tanya Moberly, who lovingly gave us the structure and agenda for the evening. She then turned it back over to Mark, who officially ushered in The Salon by introducing our special guest performers!

Our Co-Host was the Dottie Burman Award Winning Singer/Songwriter Amy Engelhardt! Amy will be appearing in TUNE IN TIME: New York City’s Favorite Musical Theatre Game Show at The York Theatre – 619 Lexington Avenue, NYC 10022 – on October 28th & November 11th – both shows at 7:30 - and also in THE PEZ SHOW at The Actors Comedy Studio in Los Angeles on November 21st at 8:00. For more information: amy-engelhardt.blogspot.com

For the first song of the evening, Amy sang Jill Sobule’s “I’m So Happy” (which she infused with a few lyrics about The Salon!) For her mid-show set, Amy gave us 3 original tunes (one of which she accompanied herself on piano!): the hilarious “How Did This Thing...?, as well as “Like Me” and “Ounce of Hope.” She closed tonight’s show with a powerful “Boston Beguine” (hello, high B flat!) by Sheldon Harnick.
Co-Host Amy Engelhardt
Our Salon Spotlight featured Ira Lee Collings (with Woody Regan on piano.) Ira just finished his critically acclaimed show OFF THE CHARTS at Don’t Tell Mama. For more information, look for Ira on Facebook.

Ira started his set with new lyrics for “I Will Survive.” He then took us on a charming journey with “He Touched Me’ (written by Milton Schafer and Ira Levin for the musical Drat The Cat!) He finished his set by telling a story about growing up gay and his relationship with the church (hint: he was Baptist.) He finished with a very moving, “No Matter What Happens.”

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

For today’s Classical Corner, Mark Janas, started with some strains from Bach’s “Minuet in G Major” (also known as “The Lover’s Concerto.”) As we know, there are so many opera and classical songs about love, so Mark started to talk a little but about the similarities between love pieces. One difference. he said, can be in the intervals between notes. He played a little bit of Tchaikovsky, “The Love Story”, and the “Romeo & Juliet” movie theme to demonstrate the Minor 6th interval. But just as he got started down that path, Mark said, “But then I thought about it, and music theory is kind of boring, right?” Ha!

After the laughter died down, Mark walked us through his thought process of what to talk about today (related to the theme) and he said, “You know what would be fun? I want to know what YOU think is the epitome of love in classical music.” And whaddya know, our Etceterrette Adam Shapiro had gone around earlier in the night to do a little poll of our patrons. Puccini was brought up as a favorite, so Mark played a bit from La Boheme (where Rodolfo sings to Mimi) - “Que Gelida Manina.”

Love is all over opera, of course, so when Mark got the suggestion of Carmen, he invited up Minda Larsen (on the fly!) to come up to sing a snippet “Habanera” (complete with audience help to sing the chorus, “Prends Garde A Toi!”

Next, he decided to play “E Flat Nocturne” by Chopin, calling it “something soaring and simple.” Something to note: If THAT is simple, I would marvel at what we would call complex! Maybe it’s SIMPLY that he makes it look so easy... :)

Love in music has a sense of mood and flowing melody. So naturally, Mark reached out to one of his fellow classical cohorts who is fluent in mood & melody, Matthew Martin Ward, who came up to play “Wid Mung” a piece by Schumann (which he said had been transcribed for the piano by Liszt!)

With that, Mark released the group to our 15 minute intermission, where the audience got to bask in the love. :)
