The Salon Wrap-Up for August 26, 2018: "One Hundred Easy Ways to Celebrate Leonard Bernstein"

Wherever he is, Leonard Bernstein probably feels a little miffed about his birthday being upstaged by the deaths of John McCain and Neil Simon's this weekend. "Always a showman!" as Mark said. However, 100 years ago on August 25th, the world was made better by the birth of this Maestro, and we were at Etcetera Etcetera to celebrate his work and life. The tables were festooned with wonderful center pieces, courtesy of David Gillam, and fingers and voices were warmed up to sing some amazing Bernstein work, among others. Many traditions were kept, starting with Mark Janas and Matthew Martin Ward, opening the evening with a two-pianist (four-handed) version of the Overture to Candide.

Our Co-Host for this momentous celebration was a tradition for The Salon, for Mark Janas' career, and indeed for the Cabaret world! 20 years back, Mark played for her debut Cabaret show, and tonight he played for her again: our Co-Host was MAC, Nitelife, Bistro, Julie Wilson Award-Winning, and 10-year Bernstein Salon Celebration Hostess, Julie Reyburn! Last night, she sang "Tonight" from West Side Story to get the festivities rolling. Julie has an amazing range, mezzo-soprano with a knack for making old lyrics fresh and in the moment. I always love hearing Julie, as she is pitch-perfect yet enriching every note with emotional clarity and wry humor when it becomes important to bend the pitch or the line of the melody. She also sang as part of Classical Corner (more information below), duetting with Zach Wobensmith on material from Trouble in Tahiti. She returned at the top of Act II to perform again from Trouble in Tahiti, singing the penultimate rage song against schmaltzy romantic cinema, "What a Movie!" (complete with Stephen Wilde, Joseph Di Salle and myself, Sierra Rein, as an enthusiastically hammy backup trio, festooned with strategically-placed spare yarmulkes from last week's bar mitzvah). Julie continued the Bernstein Salon tradition by singing the duet "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love" from West Side Story with Tanya Moberly. To finish the evening, Julie brought back Stephen, Joseph, and me, to sing the wonderful parting quartet "Some Other Time" from On The Town, featuring adjusted lyrics to reflect all the amazing Bernstein songs left unsung that night.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner
Trouble in Tahiti (1953) has an interesting creation story, which Mark went into a bit for Classical Corner. Written during Bernstein's Honeymoon, the show is about a married couple - seemingly living in a perfect white-picket-fence suburban ideal - who are experiencing a lack of communication and individually struggle with their feelings of intimacy and worth. "Sam" and "Dinah" bicker and struggle with each other throughout the show while a Greek Chorus-like trio of singers pop in and out with backup vocals and commentary. For Classical Corner, Zach Wobensmith sang "Sam," Julie Reyburn sang "Dinah," and Stephen Wilde, Joseph Di Salle and Sierra Rein performed the trio, in an excerpt of the show. You can read a synopsis here of the entire show, but for Salon the following was performed:

Scene II - Young Sam (Zach) works in his Office, while the trio comments on his business savvy
Scene III - "There is a Garden" - Dinah (Julie) at the psychiatrist, talking about a dream she had, while Sam has a moment of discussion with his secretary about an "incident."
Scene IV - Sam and Dinah run into each other in the street and make up reasons why they can't have lunch together. They then part ways, each thinking of their regrets and stuck feeling in relating to the other person, both wanting to "find a way back to the garden, where we we began."

The Salon Wrap-Up for August 19, 2018: Salon's Bar Mitzvah--13 Years of Music and Magic

Salon turns 13!  And what better way to celebrate than with its own Bar Mitzvah, complete with commemorative kippahs (aka, yarmulkes), provided by David Gillam. Host Mark Janas wanted to be inclusive, so had given some thought as to whether the event could be both a Bar- and a Bat Mitzvah, but later, co-host Adam B. Shapiro helpfully explained to me that, since Mark is the founder and host, and Mark is a guy, it's a Bar Mitzvah.  Moving on...

As "tradition" has it, the EtCeterettes were the co-hosts for Salon's annual natal celebration. In attendance tonight were Dawn Derow, Shana Farr, Janice Hall, Marnie Klar, Jaye Maynard, Candice Oden, Sarah Rice, Adam B. Shapiro, Lauren Stanford & Maureen Taylor. (Unable to attend: Erin Cronican, Kathleen France, Lorinda Lisitza, Sierra Rein & Zach Wobensmith.)

Back: Jaye Maynard, David Gillam, Mark Janas, Adam B. Shapiro, Marnie Klar, Candice Oden
Front: David Ballard, Lauren Stanford, Shana Farr, Sarah Rice, Janice Hall, Tanya Moberly, Dawn Derow, Maureen Taylor

Marnie opened the evening in excellent style by singing a Hebrew prayer she had sung at her own Bat Mitzvah, coupled with "Sabbath Prayer," from Fiddler on the Roof. The other co-host numbers were "You're There," by David Friedman (Maureen), "Nella Fantasia" (Sarah and Janice), "Ulterior Motive," by one of Salon's "resident" composers, Richie Eisenberg (Janice),  the beautiful "There's Always One You Can't Forget" (Shana), Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me" (Candice), a humorously personalized version of Gooch's Song from Mame (Lauren), "Peel me a Grape" (Jaye), and Jason Robert Brown's "Stars and the Moon" (Dawn).

The evening was closed by our own personal Rabbi, Adam B. Shapiro, who rushed to Salon after his performance in the Yiddish Theatre's Fiddler production, to give us the hysterical caveat, "Remember That We Suffer." In the course of the song, Adam also announced that he will be going on as Tevye on September 17th  and October 22nd. (Get your tickets now.  Seriously.)

  Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Why is this night's Classical Corner not like the others?  Because Mark performs Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" in its entirety, as he did the night Salon was born. On  August 20th, 2005, Mark was performing a revue, "Talk of the Town," in the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel.  After the performance, he and his co-stars repaired to the hotel lobby, and he commenced to playing the Gershwin piece on the grand piano there. Then, others from the group began to sing. Mark thought the hotel might throw them all out, but instead, they asked if they would repeat their musical offerings on other nights, and voila--Salon! Tonight, Mark outdid himself with the beauty of his playing. (It is interesting to note that two of our co-hosts mentioned that Classical Corner was an important part of why they keep coming back to Salon!)

The Salon Wrap-Up for August 12, 2018: "Location, Location, Location."

It was a true treat at Etcetera, Etcetera, which became the epicenter of fun, joy, laughs and lots of musical travels on Sunday night. The theme was "Location, Location, Location," and last night the place to be was THERE. Our Co-Host was two time Grammy nominated composer, arranger producer, Larry Kerchner. He brought with him a wonderful group of co-inhabitants on the stage to share in the festivities, and his "Love is Love" single was given with each purchase of his new CD  "Swingin' It," which features newly composed tunes performed in a retro swing style.  A three piece band was on hand to jump in and accompany many of the performers; Tex Arnold (piano), Tom Hubbard (bass) and Ray Marchica (drums), so we had an incredible swinging sound!

Purchase on Amazon.com!

Up first was Uptown," sung by Dennis Chiccino from Larry's new CD. With Tex, Tom and Ray backing Dennis' hot swing vocals, it was toe-tapping and amazing. Then, sweet and saucy Marissa Mulder performed the hilariously sultry "You're Gettin' to Me." For the second half, Mark Nadler took to the microphone! With Tex, Tom and Ray backing him up, Mark burst into "Iowa," a cleverly funny and bouncy song (written by Larry) admitting how his Jewish upbringing never quite fit in with his fellow country club neighbor members. Grateful for the next song, Mark sang the wistful and waltzing "It Was Paris," written by Larry after his wife and he waited two years after their wedding to have an official honeymoon in the famous city of lights. Our own Tanya Moberly then got up to sing a live version of a previously recorded song, "Mama Was a Working Girl," which reminded Larry of his time hanging out at 8th avenue and 42nd street. Nina Hennessy finished the evening up, first smoothly performing a dreamy song with samba rhythms "Stay With Me." Then she brought us to the location "where the music takes you" and took us home with the hot-tempo'd song "Hot Tambu."

Salon Spotlight

Tony nominee, MAC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and freshly back from performing in California, our Salon Spotlight was none-other than Sharon McNight! With Mark Janas at the piano, she started out with "Meantime" which she performs a lot at memorial services (she says). With ooodles of sass, a sultry voice coupled by powerful mezzo belt, she sashayed from verse to verse with lots of character spice and growly attitude. Next up, she brought up a conversation she once had with Margaret Whiting (on how Sophie Tucker was her godmother) while she herself was performing a Sophie Tucker show. She then performed a song by Mary Liz McNamara, "Haiku" (a hilarious bluesy song often used to check the intelligence level of the audience, so watch out). Sharon is working on a new show (with 3 musicians and 5 other cast members with her!), so keep an eye out for more information. Sharon obviously enjoys performing as or music inspired by strong women, and she next performed a song about Mary Jane - otherwise known as "Mae West" - which then segued cleverly into "Everybody's Girl" from Steel Pier, complete with a fabulous Mae impersonation including patter and jokes.

"Gone But Not Forgotten" about a bunch of sassy ladies in McNight's world, will perform at The Rrazz Room in New Hope on Saturday, August 18th at 8pm.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Well, this isn't quite a quick wrap, but a long voyage from one place to the next through Mark's Classical Corner. Mark started by quickly playing the opening to "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin, introducing his first interpretation of "Location" - New York City! Music inspires a location by evoking a place and time, bringing about almost a sensual deja vu to the listener.  He then played a snippet of "Moonlight Sonata First Movement" by Beethoven from Op. 27, no. 2, although it never evokes moonlight to Mark. Instead, to him moonlight evokes a lighter feeling - "Claire de Lune" from Suite Bergemasque by Debussy (1890) does create the idea of moonlight for Mark. It's more of a location in the imagination rather than literal. Mark then played the full "Fugue V, D major" by Johan Sebastian Bach from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier), in which Mark recognizes the Baroque style of letting the separation of notes (less legato) and how ornamentation (falling notes) would often get a trill, and double-dots were often thrown in. Listening to this work, one can imagine the location of the grand ballrooms and the space in which the dancers of Mozart's time would be snootily prancing about.

The second kind of location is where the composer specifically tells us where it's taking place within the piece. Beethoven's Pastorale Symphony VI, Mvt ii is named "By The Brook," and brings about the feeling of flowing water and natural beauty of a babbling brook well. Mark played "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Peer Gynt, suite No1 by Edvard Grieg - the familiar darkly sinister and bouncingly sly music. Maurice Ravel wrote "Ondine, Mvt i" written from a poem by Aloysius Bertrand (1842); this poem is about a mermaid paints a beautiful but dangerous lake setting, with a gorgeous twinkle of waves and glistening water. Mark also brought up "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" by Strauss (brings up the location of the river, but also the imagery of Vienna). The "New World Symphony, Mvt ii" by Anton Dvorak wrote for America - the New World - reflects his adventures during his first visit to the 'states.

And then there's the third connection one might make between music and location: the personal one. Music flows in and out of our lives and can spark memories of places, people, and experiences.
Mark played in full the piece "Kresleriana, Mvt I" by Robert Schuman, Op 16 (1838), which brings to him a specific memory of when he was a kid in College in his doorm room at Indiana University in the 70s (you can make your assumption here). This piece showed off two themes - fiery and demure that are different elements under the same tempi. Mark then played a bit of "Prelude No. 15 in Db"/"Raindrop" by Chopin, Op 28, which is a beautiful piece but brings to Mark a memory of George Sand, who experienced consumption in Majorca, Spain. Continuing with Spain, Mark then finished his Classical Corner with a "Malaguena; Suite Andalucia, Mvt vi" by Ernesto Lecuona (1933); this harkens him back a wonderful experience seeing a local guitarist in Malaga, on the coast of Spain.

The Salon Wrap-Up for August 5th, 2018: "Transitions"

For the theme of "Transitions," today Mark Janas gracefully transitioned from the BBQ Birthday he was at in Staten Island (for his Father, who turned 92 yesterday) to the Salon stage, and showed us a gorgeous black and white glamour shot of his father during his days of getting hit with pies working for Spike Jones. Even at age 92, and perhaps because of it, Sr. Janas is still singing, and performing on Public Access television! To help us transition from one singer to the other, we had raven-haired and rich-voiced Meg Flather as our Co-Host, who brought us through the twists, turns and key changes on the theme. Meg is a Bistro and Hanson winner, a two-time MAC Award winner, who will have her Cabaret Convention Debut on October 9th!

Meg Flather
Meg started out with a unique arrangement of the popular anthem "Let the River Run" complete with with spoken rhythmic opening and closing sections, bringing about a powerful belt and energy. She next perform a song written by herself, "We Are As Strong," a folk-style Carly Simon-esque protest song detailing her awakening into a stronger, more "woke" self. After the break, Meg took to the mic along with Tanya Moberly (friends since performing together in a production of Company - Marta and April, respectfully) and sang the duet "So Much Mine" by The Story, taking advantage of the lovely contrast with Meg's rich alto and Tanya's bell-like harmony. Meg then revealed a little personal story about how her mother passed away from alzheimer's in March, and how she now recognized that her mother used the disease to free a part of herself and become more joyful before she left. Staying connected to her mother in grief and in joy, Meg went into a new original piece of hers, "Like a Sunday," which included strains of "Dona Nobis Pacem," reflecting and accepting universal feelings of loss. It was very moving. At the end of the evening, Meg brought up the concept of growing ones' own roses rather than waiting for someone to give 'em to ya. Meg decided to teach this self-fulfilling attitude to her goddaughters, and penned a rock country song of self-reliance and creation, "A Song of Roses." Finally, to celebrate the fact that "We are all transitioning to who we are tomorrow," Meg performed the powerfully accepting "A Change in Me" from Beauty and the Beast.

Meg will bring back her acclaimed show "Back When We Were Beautiful" to Don't Tell Mama's on Sunday, October 14th at 6:00pm. Read about it on NiteLifeExchange.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner
To Mark, the term "transitions" can mean many things in the classical music sense. It can refer to the transition between eras of classical music, or the variances between different works throught a single composer's life, in addition to what one can call a transition between musical motifs in a single song. Mark referenced Beethoven, and how throughout his life he transitioned from one style to the next from piano concerto to another, and indeed was a part of the transition between the classical and Romantic eras. Even so, when his more dramatic music was brought to the public, even some of his most famous (now) music received lukewarm reviews at the time. He later transitioned to a more Romantic, robust and fuller sound to his work. Mark then played a bit of Mozart's work - he had work varying in style from from Don Giovanni to The Magic Flute, to works that sounded very much like Beethoven. Mark then played a bit of Mozart's "Fantasy in C minor," which contains a lot of transitions both noticeable and imperceptible. These transitions are signaled when the ear notices that the introduced themes do not "settle," but switch between A and B and contrasting motifs with lighting speed. The changing of keys can be seen in multitudes on each page, and within no time we go from C minor to the far-reaching F# minor key. These changes also include transitions of a harmonic nature in the work, reflecting the high drama in the Italian Puccini-esque style, with an emotional emphasis unique to Mozart's work. Mark then played the piece in it's entirety to appreciative audience applaud.
