The Salon Wrap-Up for April 18th, 2010

Image from artyfox.com

The theme of the evening of the 18th was "Cafe Society," although there were a lot more martinis being served than coffee. There was a lot of Gershwin, Berlin, Porter, and Coward music but also a some wonderful parody songs, original compositions, some audience interaction, and some wonderful Salon debuts. Bill Zeffiro played the first half, as Mr. Mark Janas had a gig that evening (playing for the Richard Tucker Foundation). The graciously lovely Co-Host of the evening was Janice Hall, freshly returned from her performance as Hannah in the opera "Angels in America" with the BBC Symphony, written by Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös. The Special Guest was the always special Sarah Rice, who will bring her Bistro Award-winning show "Screen Gems" once again to the Laurie Beechman theater on April 16th and April 30th. She is also performing at and promoting a Benefit Concert for a cause dear to Ms. Rice's heart - Zani's Furry Friends - on May 1st at Birdland, 5pm, entitled "Love Makes the World Go 'Round: An Evening of Song to Help Our Furry Friends." All proceeds from the event, which features a huge list of jazz, Broadway, and cabaret stars, will go towards Zani's Furry Friends. More information can be found here, and tickets can be purchased through www.instantseats.com.

Janice Hall started this evening of society music with Cole Porter's "The Laziest Gal in Town." Mark Levy energetically brought in "I'll Build A Stairway to Paradise" by Gershwin. Andrea Colby, wife of lyricist Michael Colby, played a wonderful "I Got Rhythm" arrangement from the Gershwin songbook. Next, Abby Gail sang her original tune "2008 The Bubble Burst." Bill Zeffiro then stayed at the piano to sing a Noel Coward 1945 song "Nina." Michael Colby then came to sing his original lyric (with music by Jack Urbont) entitled "Better Late Than Never," which he sweetly sang to his wife in the audience (awww!). Annie Kozuch sang "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" by Cole Porter. Annie will have a CD release party for her new album "Here With You" on May 25th at the Laurie Beechman Theater. After Annie, Eli Gilbert brought in three (count 'em) three sets of lyrics to "Let's Fall in Love" - Cole Porter's, Noel Cowards, and then a wonderful set of original music-related lyrics by Gilbert himself. Eli will have his Metropolitan Room show June 6th and June 27th with "Are We There Yet: Songs About Growing Up."

Next came Madelaine Warren singing "Stardust," then Bistro Winner/MAC Nominee Richard Eisenberg sang "Hum a Song." Then Keni Fine made his Salon debut by turning the microphone over to his "altar ego" Swami Pajamananda, who sang "If I Only Could Be Trained!" to the tune of "If I Only Had a Brain." Keni tells me that Swami Pajamananda is a spiritual, musical, comical, interactive & multi-media performance project, devoted to Lightening Up the entire planet. (Keni says he is also writing a gospel-infused musical and on the lookout for an appropriate arranger/musical director.) After Swami...I mean, Keni, Kathy Hart utilized the singers in the audience to discover if the counterpoint melody she wrote for her song "One More Song" could be sung by an elementary school chorus. Speaking of the opposite of elementary choruses, the next singer was the elegant Mark Watson, who sang "Night and Day" by Cole Porter. After Mark, I (Sierra Rein) sang Berlin's "Let's Face the Music and Dance." My group Marquee Five will be the Special Guest performer group next week for the "It Takes Two (or More) to Tango...Ensemble Songs" theme, hosted by the a cappella group VOCE. It's going to be a night of duets, harmonies, and fights for the microphones! I'm also going to be special guest-singing with Erin Cronican, Julie Reyburn, Martina Vidmar, Allissa Crea, and Lianne Marie Dobbs with Bill Zeffiro at the Borcalino Room at Flute Grammercy Thursday, April 29th at 8. More information on this event can be found here. To close the first half, Etceterette Marnie Klar brought some sassy Gershwin in with "Naughty Baby," then Etceterette Erin Cronican (with alternative lyrics supplied by Bill Zeffiro) crooned "Someone to Watch Over Me."

The second half began with the special guest of the evening, the beautiful Sarah Rice. Mark Janas had returned from his gig just on time to accompany her. Once again, her show Screen Gems will return to the Laurie Beechman April 26th and 30th! Sarah began her set with the clever "Torch Song" by Irving Berlin which she described as what happens "when sopranos go bad." After that, she sang "Waltz of my Heart" by Ivor Novello. She finished with the wonderfully off-kilter, yet classy, song by Cole Porter - "When I Was a Little Cuckoo." It fit Sarah's high soprano and sweet demeanor perfectly! The Classical Corner with Mark Janas this week was an interesting experiment to see how some classical composers would fare in the Cafe Society setting. He played Gershwin's 2nd of three preludes, a bit of Schubert, Chopin's "The Cello" and a little minuet by Chopin, and lastly a rousing "The Hunting Song" by Mendelssohn.

Next sang Salon Producer Tanya Moberly (her show "Theater Songs" will be at Don't Tell Mama on May 19th with Mark Janas and Ritt Henn, and will also perform for the benefit of Zani's Furry Friends with Sarah Rice on May 1st), with "Buddy Beware." Then we had another Salon Debut with Brian Henry, who has a beautiful baritone and sang Kander & Ebb's "Sometimes a Day Goes By." Next, Stephen Wilde (who is part of the VOCE quartet who will host the Salon next week) sang the hilarious "Way Ahead of My Time," written by Peter Mills.

We then had some time for encores. First up was our co-host Janice Hall with "Youkali: Tango Habanera" - music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Roger Fernay. Bill Zeffiro sang "World Weary" by Noel Coward, Madelaine Warren sang "Remind Me" by Kern & Fields, Eli Gilbert brought in his parody version of "Gimme Gimme," Annie Kozuch sang "Falling Out of Love Can Be Fun" by Irving Berlin, and Sierra Rein (me) sang "It Only Happens When I Dance With You," another Berlin song. Marnie Klar sang "In A Very Unusual Way" from Nine, Erin Cronican sang the do-wop song "You Don't Know Me," Richard Eisenberg sang his Clinton-era parody of "Officer Krupke" from West Side Story, then Mark Watson sang the heartbreaking "What'll I Do?" by Berlin. To close the evening, Janice Hall sang "If Love Were All" by Noel Coward.

The Salon Wrap-Up for April 11, 2010!

The theme of the night was "MAC Attack," so anything that had "MAC" or was involved with the MAC Awards, or awards in general, was certainly considered on-theme (and many MAC Award nominees were in attendance, so when they sang they were automatically on theme!). The Co-Host of the evening was Lennie Watts, a multiple MAC and Bistro Award winner both as a singer and as a Director. Lennie opened the evening with the hearty "That's Life," then introduced returning Whitney Chapman, who sang "At Times Like This," which she dedicated to her dog "Macs." Kevin Dozier got up and did something unexpectedly funny – he sang the lyrics to the Brady Bunch to the melody of a song from Les Miserables! Kevin Dozier will be at Feinstein's July 5th this summer and has a CD out entitled "Love-wise."

Next, Bill Zeffiro brought his rancor to the piano by singing an original Zeffiro number, "Better Than Nothing." Charter Salon member Adam MacDonald then accompanied himself on piano with his original piece dedicated to his wife, "Just Yet." He then sang with fellow Charter Salon Members Chris Weikel (they will be co-host The Salon on May 16th's “Back to Our Roots” themed night along with other "The Talk of the Town" cast members) sang "I Can See It" from The Fantastiks. Helena Grenot, who will bring her new show "Damned If I Know" to Don't Tell Mama on May 18th and 19th, sang "Skylark." It was then time for comedy; Danielle Erin Rhodes brought her spoof lyrics on with "(If I Could) Win a MAC Award," echoing what many in the audience must have been thinking. After that, Stephanie Zagoren then crooned "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." Rob Langeder scatted and bebopped his way through "All of Me" and Kim Kuznia then rocked her way through "Ain't No Way."

Raissa Katona Bennett (who received a Bistro Award on Tuesday for The Concert at Tudor City Greens, which has it's first show on May 5th!) performed the original and hilarious "Torch Song for Raissa," written especially for her by Michael John LaCuisa. Following his wife, Dr. Garrett Bennett then brought his guitar up stage and accompanied himself on his own original song, "The Undertow." Next, 2010 MAC Award Nominee Joan Jaffe sang the moral tale of "The Spider and the Fly" by Murray Grand. Catherine Overfelt sang "I Miss the Mountains" from Next To Normal and Sierra Rein stole from fellow Marquee Five member Mick Bleyer one of his songs from their (our) show "We Can Make It" by singing "Sara Lee" by Kander & Ebb (plug: Marquee Five is also nominated for a MAC Award for Vocal Duo/Group). To close the first set, our first Etceterette of the evening, Janice Hall (who will be co-hosting The Salon next Sunday, April 18th) sang the poignant "I Wish You Love," then our second Etceterette Jenna Esposito brought a taste of Connie Francis with "Who's Sorry Now?"

The second half of the evening featured the special guest of the evening, Carole Bufford. I had seen Carole sing at both Birdland and at The Broadway by The Year 1927 concert at Town Hall. She was a singer in the 2009 MetroStar Talent Challenge last year. Carole was accompanied by Nate Buccieri. She started out (with the impromptu comedy cameo by David Ballard) with Randy Newman's "Short People." She then sang a haunting song entitled "I'm Thinking of the Sea" from The Vampire of Dusseldorf. Lastly, she sang a raw and cutting version of "Fulsom Prison Blues." We all were thrilled at her performance!

Lennie Watts and Carole Bufford

Mark Janas' Classical Corner was a lesson in drama, conflict, build and surprise as he played Chopin's "G minor Ballade". The quote of the evening was "it's better to express than it is to impress," which I thought was appropriate even in the midst of Awards seasons. After Mark, Tanya Moberly sang the sweet "I Won't Send Roses (Reprise)". Her show at Don't Tell Mama will take place on May 19th at 9:15pm. Next, Jack DiMonte sang a swinging "Social Call," Craig Pomranz sang "Make Someone Happy," and Mary Lahti tickled our funny bones (and our darker imaginations) with a parody of Mary Poppins' "A Spoonful of Sugar." Phyllis Mollen sang the lovely ballad "I Remember," and then MAC Award-nominee Kathleen France performed a song from her show "The Book of Love" entitled "In Short." After her, David Ballard sang a rousing "The Streets of Dublin." Next, Tracy Stark and Rob Langeder took to the piano and mic (respectfully) for Rob to sing a MAC-Nominated song by Tracy (who is also nominated for a MAC award for Musical Director ) entitled "This Time". Then, Barbara Porteus (at Feinstein's on July 31st and August 1st) crooned "Someone To Watch Over Me" with the piano stylings of Bill Zeffiro accompanying her. Alicia Littman sang "Black Coffee," and after her the MAC-Nominated Michelle Collier sang "Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry" from her show "A Tribute to the Hollywood Blondes." Collier will perform her show again on Sunday, April 25th at Don't Tell Mama at 7pm.

Steve Schachlin then took the piano with Steven Bienskie, cast member of the original Off-Broadway musical The Last Session, performing "Going It Alone" from the show. As a rousing finale before Lennie Watts closed the evening, composer/singer Chris Wade presented a scene from his show "Such Sweet Sorrow," a new "competition"-themed musical with music by Wade and lyrics by some newcomer named William Shakespeare. In this show, a series of Romeos and a series of Juliets compete to see who can be chosen to become the Top ill-fated lovers. After the wonderful harmonies of the hopeful Romeos and Juliets subsided, Lennie Watts closed the evening with "It Goes Like It Goes." And it did.

Next Sunday, April 25th, will be a special Salon for myself, as I return with MAC Award Nominated Vocal Group Marquee Five (consisting of Mick Bleyer, Adam Hemming, Vanessa Parvin, myself - Sierra Rein, and Julie Reyburn) to be a special guest for the theme “It Takes Two (or More) to Tango – Ensemble Songs.” The Co-Host of the evening will be VOCE, a wonderful all-male a cappella group consisting of Keith Harris, Paul Harris, Dave Kindinger, and Stephen Wilde. I'm very excited to see this group for the first time, and I have it on good authority that perhaps a few more vocal groups, duos, or trios will attend. So be sure to clean out your ears in preparation for some fabulous harmonies and on-stage antics, and bring your own double/triple/quadruple threat pieces as well!

See you there!

The Salon Wrap-Up for April 04, 2010!

This past Sunday's Salon was filled with the sounds of the Earth, and nature, and bells, and zings!...and yet even a bit of quiet filled the Etcetera Etc Restaurant...ahhh The theme was "All the Sounds of the Earth are Like Music." The guest co-host of the evening was the gloriously-voiced Mark Watson, and MAC Award-nominated (amongst other awards) Gretchen Reinhagen was the special guest performer. AND each singer received a lovely hand-decorated egg from David Gillam (who is also the artist who drew the piano logo sketch for The Salon. Take a look at it at the top of this page. See? Awesome!) Mark started the evening off off-mic with the song that inspired the evening's theme "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'" from Oklahoma. Jan Brennan sang "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and Dr. Sue sang her original song "Dare to Believe" (her CD, Keys of Love, is available at cdbaby.com). Joey Infante, with Mike McDonald on piano, gave us a musicology lesson with "The Birth of the Blues." Helena Grenot sang about whistling (where is Steve Herbst when you need him?) with "Anyone Can Whistle." Helena will be performing her show "Damn'd if I know..." at Don't Tell Mama on both May 18th at 7pm and May 21st at 8pm. Next, Felicia Mae Strassman crooned through "The Days of Wine & Roses" and Sunny Leigh fired out "Why Haven't I Heard From You."

Staying on-theme, Jane Glick sang from the musical Closer than Ever with the lovely "I Hear the Bells." Michael Colby sang from his original show Charlotte Sweet (which is going to be produced at Southwestern University, Phoenix, AZ) the song "It Could Only Happen in the Theatre." Then Bobbie Horowitz regaled us about her friend's "Nothing to Complain About Blues." Erin Cronican brought a different flavor to the noiseful night with "Quiet" by Jonathan Reid Gealt. David Rigano sang his original comedic song "Call Me A Doctor," and Bistro-Award recipient (and MAC Award nominee) Richie Eisenberg brought in his parody of "My Way" entitled "How Much I Weigh." Matthew Ward then sang his MAC Award-nominated song "Say Hello" (lyrics by Peter Napolitano from their musical Lady in Penthouse B). With Matthew still at the piano, Sierra Rein sang "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart." Her (my) group Marquee Five is nominated for a MAC Award (best Vocal Duo/Group) and is having one last hurrah performance of "We Can Make It: The Songs of Kander & Ebb" at Don't Tell Mama on April 15th, 8:30pm. Next, Etceterette and International Soprano Arianna showed all three of her vocal stylings with the challenging "The Girl in 14 G." To close the first half, Etceterette Danielle Erin Rhodes got behind the piano and played/sang an original Easter song co-written with Jason T. Hurley.

The second half brought the incredible Gretchen Reinhagen to the Etcetera Etc. stage. Gretchen is a Nightlife Winner, Bistro Award, and MAC nom (her show "Special Kaye" can be seen May 1st with Barry Director, Music Director David Gains at the Metropolitan Room). Gretchen started out with "Out of My Mind," then sang Tracy Stark's "Sometimes Life is Kind," and finished with "Ain't It Good?" from Children of Eden. Gretchen also plugged a Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp workshop entitled "The Art of Cabaret Workshop," which she attended last year and which will return in the last week of August.

This week's Classical Corner featured Mark Watson, who sang the beautiful "The Lake Isle of Innisfree", text by Yeats, composed by Ben Moore -- and Mark Janas who gave a wonderful music lesson on what overtones are. Mark then sat at the piano with Matthew Ward to play a duet on Beethoven's "Symphony No. 6 'Pastoral.'" The quote of the night came from Mark Janas, who declared "I'm the cuckoo!" as he and Matt played through Beethoven's musical interpretations of nightingales, quails, and of course, a cuckoo.

Tanya Moberly brought in a vigorous "Don't Rain on My Parade" (on May 19th, Tanya will perform all Theater songs at Don't Tell Mama!), and Gladys Nilsen sang the spanish version of "Besame Mucho." Then Joan Jaffe threw on a backwards ball cap and rapped (!) her way through "Easter Parade." Joan is a MAC Award nominee, and is currently writing & directing "Flash Bam Alakazaam, a Tribute to Betty Hutton." She can also be seen dancing in slow-mo for the SNL comic music video short Boombox. Whitney Chapman returned to The Salon with a guided rain-sound exercise, which led into "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head."
Danielle Grabianowski - her MAC Award nominee show "Old New, Borrowed and Blues" will return to The Metropolitan Room on Weds, April 7th - sang "I Want to be Evil," an then our favorite Etcetera Etc. employee David Ballard gave a rousing "Anthem." Michelle Collier sang "This is My Beloved." Michelle is nominated for a MAC Award and her Tribute to Hollywood Blondes show will return to Don't Tell Mama on April 11, 7pm. To close the evening, Steve Schalchlin brought a sing-along Easter song entitled "Lazarus Come Out." Steve is thrilled that his show Zero Hour can now be seen at the DR2 theater and has received an Off-Broadway League's Lucille Lortel Award Nomination. Mark Watson closed this tune-ful evening with "My Life Belongs to You" by Ivor Novello, from the show The Dancing Years.
