The Salon Wrap-Up for March 22, 2015 - "Show Business Potpourri"

March 22, 2015
Theme: Show Business - A Potpourri of Entertainment (Broadway, Cabaret, Pop, Rock, Classical & Special Material)

Whoever said March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb didn't account for what happens in between - snow and wind, and ever changing temperatures! Regardless, we were snuggled inside ready for an amazing evening of music and laughter, and the night did not disappoint.

We started the evening by announcing a lineup change. Ann Dawson, who was originally scheduled to co-host, went in for a bit of emergency surgery (she's fine and one the mend!) so our fabulous Salon Spotlight (MAC, Bistro & Nightlife Award Winner Gretchen Reinhagen and her fearless pianist collaborator Tracy Stark) stepped up into the Co-Host position! (See? Understudies DO go on!)

Our Co-Host, Gretchen Reinhagen!

Gretchen explained that theme works perfectly with her as today's host, because her upcoming cabaret series bring back a few shows that she's done in the last 6 years (think of them like Gretchen's Greatest Hits - fabulous!) With that, she started the eclectic evening with a ballsy, bluesy "I'm A Woman" which was from her cabaret "Almost Blue." For her mid-show set she started with a rousing (and possessive!) "Love Will Keep Us Together" (from last year's "Listen to the Music: The Songs from My 70s" cabaret), followed by a powerful, "One Way Out." She closed the set with "A Lazy Afternoon" which was featured in her show"Special Kaye" as well as "Almost Blue." For her final song of the night, Gretchen invited Mark Janas to join her as she sang, "When?" a hilarious and yet mournful tune written by Barry Kleinbort.

As mentioned above, Gretchen will be revisiting 3 of her past shows within 3 months with 3 different bands at The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC 10010 –  REINHAGEN REDUX: ALMOST BLUE will be April 1st at 7pm; SPECIAL KAYE will be May 4th at 7pm; and LISTEN TO THE MUSIC: SONGS OF MY 70’S will be June 7th at 4pm. Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

With the lid of the baby grand piano lifted, Mark Janas invited up Finnish violinist Leena Jaakola and her pianist friend Markus Kaitila to the stage. Mark introduced the music they'd be playing, 3 amazing movements from "Violin Sonata # 2" in G Major by Edvard Grieg, and started by telling a story about the work. Apparently, a critic once told Grieg, "this piece is too Norwegian" to which Grieg replied, "My next will be EVEN MORE Norwegian." I like that kind of confidence. :)

There are few words that can describe the beauty and power of these two amazing musicians. Suffice it to say, there was a full standing ovation from the crowd when they were done with the segment. Truly gifted talent!

The Salon Wrap-Up for March 15, 2015 - "Food Glorious Food - Life is a Banquet"

March 15, 2015
Theme: Food Glorious Food - Life is a Banquet

What better place than a restaurant to satisfy the theme of "Food, Glorious Food - Life is A Banquest?" And what better co-host of the evening to whet our appetite than Charles Baran who, along with Ben Krauss at the piano, guided us through a smorgasbord of food-related music.  To begin the evening, Charles handed out a few select pieces of fruit to the audience and asked the question "Who'll Buy?" Throughout the evening, Charles GAVE out commemorative pencils (with The Salon's name and the March 15th date emblazoned on them and a happy face on the eraser) to every singer and audience member. His mid-evening set featured a trio of songs: "It's An Art!" about waiter-ing and attending to the needs of each dining guest, then the heartfelt "Dreams," by the Cranberries, finalized by "Pelican," a hilarious song set in the middle of Poland ordering Polish food. Charles finished the night's musical meal with a dessert of a song, a piece written for The Salon called "I Love Being Here With You!" Charles will perform his show "Recipes For Disaster" on April 23, 9:30pm at The Metropolitan Room. Check out charlesbaran.com for more information.

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Food, music, architecture, language - all cultures have very specific tones and intonations, colors and structures that make up their unique identity.  Mark Janas used this week's Classical Corner to go through some major food cultures and how they relate to the classical music of its country of origin.  For example, in Asian music (played in the pentatonic scale), the music features pointilism, small details, and thus the same can be found in some traditional Asian food (stir fry, sushi, rice).  Germanic classical musicians were the pioneers in formalistic musical breakthroughs. Listen to German classical composers and you find structure, impact and form but, like German cooking, less elegant. German classical music is more grounded, and (much like German cooking) you can find meaty heavy chords like those in Brahms. French classical music music in contrast is subtle and detailed, like the flow of French sauces. The language of German and French follow (we don't even complete the words of French language!).  Italian food is wide open, dynamic, and so is it's music.   Imagine sauce on pasta, tomatoes and oil and cheese, and language that has words that end in vowels (easy to sing in opera), with a fully emotional quality. And then there's the American composerd Aaron Copeland of "Appalachian Spring," which arises from the simple Shaker culture and food, with open harmonies like open spaces of the West, a feeling of a sense of discovery, and the eventual incorporation of other cultures and language. Mark wants to know if a book has been written on the correlation between the music of a culture and the food it creates for itself, so if anyone knows of one...email him!

The Salon Wrap-Up for March 8, 2015 - "The Way We Are"

March 8, 2015
Theme: The Way We Are

Sally Darling, who is as true to her name as anyone I've met, was our wonderful Co-Host of this past Sunday's evening, singing songs about "The Way We Are." An award-winning audio book narrator, Sally (with Matthew Martin Ward at the piano) sang "Dark Horse" and "Modest Maid" to start out the evening, both revealing songs with a witty lick to them. Later in the evening, Sally sang a glorious medley of "I'm Old Fashioned"/"The Folks Who Live On the Hill" and the hilarious "Bronxville Darby and Joan." To wrap up at the end, she finalized the sentiment of the night with "Stairway to Paradise" and a Dancing-themed medley including "I Won't Dance" and "Two To Tango." Sally and Matthew are excited to present their show "Matters of the Heart" on Sunday, March 22nd and Sunday, March 28th (both at 5pm) at Don't Tell Mama.

Co-Host Sally Darling
Salon Spotlight was multiple album recording artist (having seven under her belt) Stephanie Weems!  Stephanie will present her show "Stephanie Weems in Wildflower in the City – Love, Laughter & Song" as part of the Salon Presents series this Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 7pm and 9:30pm (more information here).  Mark Janas will music direct, and Andy Gale will be Director.  Comfortable in singing Broadway, Stephanie sang three Classic songs in her Spotlight set, starting with "Do I Hear a Waltz?" which featured her lovely exuberance. This was followed by the lilting "Will You?" and her sweet soprano range. And finally, Stephanie closed the set with the Monotony-turned-spicy "One Note Samba."

Salon Spotlight: Stephanie Weems
Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark Janas took our attention away from the keys and focused them to his feet for Classical Corner, this time explaining how the pedals of the piano work! From the soft left pedal to the middle "bastard child" pedal for some of the bass notes to the right footed pedal that opens up these high notes, the pedals of the piano have caused an evolution of sound and nuance to classical music. Mark showed us how playing some classical pieces without the pedals made them sound childlike and laughable, like "a bizaare ballet class," and how the addition of the pedals - in particular on the Andine by Ravel - allowed "strange notes" to "become a shimmer" and allow an arched pattern, crescendos and phrases.  The addition of pedals by Brahms' age changed a sense of composition, and even created sympathetic notes to vibrate within a piece while the bottom notes played. Mark then finished the Corner with Chopin's Nocturne in E flat major opus 9, which I remember my mom rehearsing at our piano, pedals and all.

The Salon Wrap-Up for March 1, 2015 - "Lift Yourself Up- Songs of Inspiration"

March 1, 2015
Theme: "Lift Yourself Up - Songs of Inspiration."

The theme of "Lift Yourself Up" was welcome as March came (as it usually does) in like a Lion.  Those who walked through the outside snow certainly are looking for the Lamb to make an appearance soon!  But it was all smiles inside, and warm fuzzy feelings by the end of the night.

Our Co-Host of the evening was the MAC Award Winning, and currently MAC Nominated (Female Vocalist), Kim Grogg!  She was accompanied throughout the evening by Steven Ray Watkins, the amazing pianist, music director, and arranger, who also did a stellar job singing backup vocals for Kim.  They started out in a rousing way by inviting us to go "Up The Ladder to the Roof."  Later, in her three-song mini-set, Kim sang a beautiful combination of "Follow Your Star" and "Anyplace I Hang My Hat is Home," followed by "Meantime" and the raucous Cole Porter gem "Supermarket in Old Peking."  At the end of the evening, Kim and Steven returned to perform a mashup of "Happy as the Day is Long"/"Happy," which made us all clap our hands to the rhythm and want to hug the world at its completion.

Our Illustrious Co-Host, Kim Grogg
The Salon Spotlight this week was a brief but appreciated appearance by singer-director Lennie Watts.  He and Kim performed a duet of the soul-searching "Give Me A Voice." Find more information about Lennie at www.lenniewatts.com, as he is continuously directing, singing and coaching in New York City.

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

We all seem to feel that music uplifts us from the bottom of our very soul, and certainly classical music has helped our ears codify it to a certain extent.  Mark Janas proved it by selecting a few uplifting pieces from classical music, usually those that feature a slow rhythm, beautiful canons and chords, simple, deep and resonating.  Beethoven's 132nd String Quartet, for instance, was an homage to his own healing and recovery, and featured a beautiful rocking feeling, like a baby rocking in his mother's arms.  Mark also played from Gustov Holst, a him to his country in which he pledged "the service of my love."  And then he featured the hymn "Sine Nomine (For All The Saints)," which certainly had a comforting way of alternating chords and an ease of harmony.  For the last number, Mark was joined by Matthew Martin Ward, who provided an excellent "walking bass line" (an organ player's term for the movement of the feet - not the hands - throughout a piece).  Their four-hand improvisation of an "inspirational" song grew and grew from classical fingering to more American Gospel themes until it burst into two obvious (and full-voiced from the audience) sing along songs: "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Carousel) and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" (The Sound of Music).  Shivers!!!
