The Salon Wrap-Up for September 25, 2016 - "Journeys & Homecomings"

Fall is finally here, not only in date but also in feel - the brisk air, the warm sweaters, and the collective sigh of relief as we're released from the gripping humidity! So it's fitting that our theme tonight was, "Journeys and Homecomings" as we find ourselves journeying from one season into another.

Our Co-Host was the inveterate crooner, David Meulemans! To kick off the evening, David gave us a lively and fun, "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries." For his mid-show set, David started with a delicate and sweet, "Extraordinary." He then invited the audience to listen for their hometown in his next song, "Rhode Island." He followed that with a charming, "Picking Up The Pieces." For the last song of the evening, David sang a haunting, "Grateful."

David will be at The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC 10010 – with DECEMBER SONGS on December 20th at 7pm, with special guest Avery Sommers. For more information: www.davidmeulemans.com

Our Co-Host, David Meulemans!
Our Salon Spotlight featured MAC Award Winner & Two-Time Emmy Award Nominee Kathleen France (with Ian Herman on piano)! This consummate performer started her set with "Mambo Italiano" (because, as she reminded us, that's the perfect song for an Irish Catholic to lead with!) Her next song, "The Prayer" gave her a chance to share with us her gorgeous soprano (and some gorgeous Italian, to boot.) She capped her set with a lively (dare I say, snappy?), big-voiced jazz rendition of, "The Lady is a Tramp."

Kathleen will be at The Iridium – 1650 Broadway, NYC 10019 – with an eight-piece band in LA BELLA VITA for one night only - October 4th at 8pm. For more information: www.theiridium.com Buy tickets online now and use code BELLA for a $10 discount!

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark started by tickling the keys and says, "Thus starts an Impromptu." He went on to talk about one of the world's most prolific composers - Franz Schubert, who only lived to age 31. Schubert was heavily influenced by his idol, Beethoven. It's not known if the two ever met, but there is a story that on his deathbed, Beethoven was brought scores of Schubert's songs and said he was impressed.

Mark says that what Schubert is most known for are his lieder - or art songs. Schubert had a very dramatic imagination when it came to writing songs, almost like an opera composer, which was evident in the way he wrote music to support the story being told. Mark invited up Maria Fernanda Brea to sing for us - first she performed his "Gretchen am Spinnrade" ("Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel" is the English translation of the title), which borrows its text from Goethe's Faust. Maria then offered "Chere Nuit," a gorgeous song that she discovered last year by the little known Alfred Bachelet, a French conductor and composer with deep German influences. For her last song, Maria gave us the Italian, "De Donde Venis, Amore" by Joaquin Rodrigo. She says this song (translator as "Where Have You Been, My Love?") was a bit of a saucy song, originally written with a lot of guitar, because the composer was a guitarist. It was wonderful having Maria back with us after visiting many times while a student at Manhattan School of Music (she is now at Juilliard.)

The Salon Wrap-Up for September 18, 2016 - "Delicious"

Personally, "Delicious" is my very favorite adjective to describe something I love. My friends are delicious, living in NYC is delicious, and of course food is delicious. So what a fantastic theme to bring in the The Salon for a balmy Sunday night!

Our Co-Host was Broadway Veteran and Hanson Award Winner Rosemary Loar (with Frank Ponzio on piano!) From the minute she walked on the stage, Rosemary had the audience seduced and tamed. Her first song was a fun and sassy, "Save Your Kisses for Chocolate" (where she lauded the merits of dark chocolate over milk chocolate, of which I am in fervent agreement.) For her mid-show set, Rosemary started with a bluesy, "Harmless Little Sin" (with delicious tickling of the keys by Mr. Ponzio). Following that she sang a sultry, "Ain't Got Nothing," remarking that this song definitely broke the 8th Commandment - a reference to a joke earlier in the evening about how sin can sometimes be delicious! To close the set, our lovely co-host sang a stunning arrangement of Annie Lennox's "Cold." And for the final performance of the evening, Rosemary brought us a luscious, original tune, "Ice Cream."

Rosemary will be performing many of these songs again in THE QUANDO SWING at The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC 10010 – October 1st at 4pm.

Our co-host, Rosemary Loar!

Our Salon Spotlight featured THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND: A GOLDEN GIRLS MUSICAL. Starring Charles Baran (as Dorothy-a), Joshua Warr (as Blanche-ette), Nick Brennan (as Roz) & Michael James Valvo (as Sophie) and Michael Carrasco (as Ricky Martin) - The show will run every Sunday night at 7pm starting September 25th at The Cutting Room - 44 East 32nd St, New York, NY 10010.

Their set included fantastic renditions of:

1) "I'll Be There For You"
2) "Fab Fads"
3) "Miami"

The set also included scripted dialogue to introduce each song - what as a fun little musical revue for our viewing pleasure!

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Tonight was an improvised Classical Corner, because our featured guest was called away to support an ill roommate in the hospital. (Don't ever say that humanity os lost in this city!) So to compensate, Mark started to ruminate on the theme...Delicious. What makes musical piece delicious? Is it the theme? The melody? The orchestration? The musical styling of the composer? Then a thought occurred to him - sometimes what makes a piece delicious is when all of the elements are wrapped up in one, short, perfect delicious piece of writing. So he talked with the other pianists in the room and asked them to come up and improvise (i.e. from memory) a short piece that they found delicious.

Here is the magic that each of them pulled out of their proverbial hats!

Mark Janas played the "Moment Musicaux No. 3 in F minor" by Franz Schubert

Matthew Martin Ward played a Chopin Mazurka in B flat, starting by explaining how the structure of mazurkas work and then wowing us with a

Frank Ponzio played a piece by Dizzy Gillespie, which he felt borrowed from the classical genre thought's known as a jazz piece.

Mark then finished with one of his favorite pieces - Chopin's "Butterfly" Etude. Though etudes (which means to study or to learn, in French) were technically created to teach the pianist to learn a certain skill, Mark said that Chopin's Etudes are particularly masterful, and upon hearing it this audience was inclined to agree. The reception was feverish!

The Salon Wrap-Up for September 11, 2016 - "It's Better With a Partner"

The beginning of our evening was solemn and reverent as Mark Janas acknowledged the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. As he reminded us, there is no better way to commemorate and honor the tragedy than by creating music in a loving community. With that he introduced our Co-Host, the inspiring and talented (and purveyor of yuck-yuck jokes) - Mark Watson!

From the back of the crowd Mark made quite an entrance, throwing down his napkin gauntlet as Don Quixote with the title song from The Man of La Mancha, with Edd Clark as his Sancho. (Let it be noted that I want all shows to start just this way.) Later in the set Mark sang a stunning and powerful "Be There" (with lyrics by Michael Colby) which was written in response to the 9/11 attacks.

To kick off the second set Edd joined Mark once again to sing a incredibly moving, "Lily's Eyes" from The Secret Garden, and Joan Jaffe joined Mark for "Two of a Kind." Mark capped the set with an adorable, "An Old Fashioned Wedding" from Annie Get Your Gun, paired with Salon producer Tanya Moberly. Mark concluded the evening with a gorgeous duet with Sarah Rice - "Wanting You."

Mark will be appearing as the killer Cyclops in Handel’s ACIS AND GALATEA at The Opera Theatre of Montclair on Saturday, September 10th at 2pm. For more information: www.operamontclair.org

Our Master of Ceremonies, Mark Watson!
