The Salon Wrap-Up for April 23, 2017 - "Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done"

It was a night of youthful energy and scholarly love, as the students of Mark Janas' Manhattan School of Music Cabaret class provided effervescent Co-Hosting for the evening. Even before the 7pm "curtain" began, the students were singing from their chairs as Mark played the piano from memory on a number of opera and musical theater pieces. Master Emcee, and MSM Teacher-Director Andy Gale was on hand to bring forward people to and from the stage, and pianist Shane Schag expertly played through these classic Broadway showpieces and standards for the students. The students, who had already performed this work in their Spring Cabaret "Comes Love" this past month, were: Angela Candeal, Celeste Morales, Christina Parnell, Luke Sikora, Zuhao Zhang, Jianing Zhang, and Xulei Zhao. Also in attendance was the choreographer of their work, Michelle Puskas, as well as other supportive MSM students.

To hit the evening's top with a high note, the entire ensemble stood up directly from their chairs to sing the snappy (literally and stylistically) "Comes Love" from Yokel Boy by Sam H. Stept, Lew Brown, and Charles Tobias. A few songs in, we had a double lesson in Irving Berlin's work as Luke and Angela playfully duetted on "You're Just in Love" from Call Me Madam; then Christina Parnell sang "Blue Skies" from Betsy (and later, White Christmas) in a rich, powerful alto. Next, Jianing joyfully (with soaring vocals and with help of the Ensemble, who added their solo voices into a beautiful collection of harmonies) on Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's "Alone in the Universe" from Seussical. Xulei and Zuhao then did some amazing baritone songs: "Once Upon a Dream" from Frank Wildhorn's The Scarlet Pimpernel and "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific. To end the first act, we had a nice big set of songs from the MSM Students. First, Jianing, Angela, and Celeste trio'd with gloriously melded voices and twittery "birdie" harmonies on "Sing for Your Supper" from The Boys from Syracuse (Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart). Luke then came back to sing "I Cannot Hear the City" from Marvin Hamlisch and Craig Carnelia's The Sweet Smell of Success with heartfelt, smooth tenor vocals. We then witnessed some coffee talk between Christina and Jianing over guys as they sang a cleverly divided "The Boy Next Door" from Meet Me in St. Louis by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane. Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "A House is Not a Home" (a pop song featured in Promises, Promises on Broadway) was sung soulfully by Xulei.

To open the second half of the Salon, Mark Janas re-introduced the MSM students, who started out a heartache-themed set of music. A hilariously inebriated bro-filled "Agony" from Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods was sung with gusto by Luke and Zuhao. Luke then passed the glass to Angela, who wistfully sang "Jimmy" from Thoroughly Modern Millie by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan. Christina and Celeste then sloshed their drinks up to and onto the stage to sing a woman's-heart-to-woman's-heart song (one dear to my heart), "You Can Always Count on Me" from Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels. Departing from musical theater entirely, Xulei and Zuhao sang Paul McCartney's "Yesterday," with beautiful pain and heartache. To end the set, Celeste then brought down the roof with John Kander and Fred Ebb's hopeful anthem from Cabaret, "Maybe This Time."

MSM Director/Teacher Andy Gale also took a moment to beautifully croon a beautiful arrangement by Mark Janas of "Moon River" by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer from Breakfast at Tiffany's and "It Goes Like It Goes,"from Norma Rae by David Shire and Norman Gimbel.

For the end of the evening, the MSM students brought in a series of upbeat and antidote-to-what-ails-this-world songs: "Pick Yourself Up" from Swingtime by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer, and "Sing Happy" from Flora, the Red Menace, by John Kander and Fred Ebb.

The Salon Wrap-Up for April 9, 2017 - "Still Happy"

It's beginning to look more and more like Swing...I mean, Spring...in New York City, and we were thrilled to have vocalist-saxophonist Danny Bacher to Co-Host the evening with Mark Janas on Sunday. Danny is a true Renaissance Man: as a writer, saxophonist, singer, comedian, and puppeteer, he has been seen touring nationally and internationally, Off-Broadway, and at the Rose Hall and Carnegie Hall. His debut album, "Swing That Music" has been on the Grammy Ballot! He started the evening with his upbeat and bluesy original tune "In Spite of This, I'm Still Happy," which featured a saxophone solo in the bridge and one of my favorite lyrics of the evening, "'Woe is me' is just a point of view." This song will be the featured track on his upcoming album, "Still Happy." For the Second Act set, Danny started with Leonard Bernstein's soulful "Lucky to Be Me" from On The Town, and utilized his saxophone to bounce the melody around with Mark Janas on the piano. This song will be on his new upcoming CD. Then he sang two songs from his past CD, "Swing That Music," which honors "Three Louis's" - Prima, Armstrong, and Jordan. He sang a song originally sung by Louis Jordan, "If It's Love You Want Baby, That's Me"; it included a saucy "rap" break that showed off Danny's standup comedy chops.  Then he picked up his saxophone (it's a soprano) and honored Louis Armstrong by performing the sweet "Dream a Little Dream of Me." He capped the evening off with an awesome rendition of Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm," which started with a fast-walking bass line from Mark on piano and then melded into the classic lyrics we all know and love. Then, Danny threw in some amazing vocal scatting that brought it to a uniquely sparkling Finale!

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark Janas introduced the era of Impressionism to the audience, which artistically is full of pastel colors and fuzzy lines; the idea was to give an idea of an object, concept, or image, but to keep it in soft focus. Musically, this was applied by the use of "planing," in which the melodies run in parallel with each other with sudden key changes interspersed. The Impressionists loved the same music that inspired early American Jazz: thick harmonies and chord progressions as well as themes from African music.  One of the most famous musical impressionists of the late 19th Century was Claude Debussy, a French composer who, alongside Maurice Ravel, epitomized the composition style. In fact, Ravel once said he wished he had the opportunity to study with George Gershwin! However, the two Impressionistic composers had distinct differences when it came to work ethic: while Ravel worked in an organized manner with "office" composing hours from 9am to 5pm, Debussy often worked all hours of the evening, and often called on friends at 4am to hear a new piece he may have just finished. One of those pieces he might have debuted at 4am was "Clair de Lune," a suite in 3 movements that is a famous example of the Impressionistic musical period. Mark then started playing this famous piece as written, exemplifying the flowing and undulating motions of the melody line. Then, Danny picked his soprano saxophone up and began to do a jazz improvisation on top of the pre-composed music, showing off just how the beautiful styles of both Impressionism and Jazz complemented each other. It was gorgeous!

The Salon Wrap-Up for April 2, 2017 - "Sweet & Sour"

On the theme of "Sweet and Sour," Mark Janas brought in thoughts of Chinese food and played some sweet and sour chords on the piano. But the concept throughout the evening went beyond food and the black and white keys! Our Co-Host was Cheo Bourne, who was the runner-up of Don't Tell Mama's "Mama's Next Big Act" for 2017. He brought both sweet and sour to the stage, and introduced our evening with the fact that our sweetest moments often come from the sourest periods of our lives by singing "Dance With My Father Again" by Luther Vandross and Richard Marx. It allowed his beautiful high tenor to shine. For his Act II set, Cheo brought in fellow "Mama's Next Big Act" singer Lena Moy-Borgen to duet on the lovingly sacrificial song "I'd Give it All For You" by Jason Robert Brown (Songs for a New World). Leaving his romantic tenor voice, he then belted the soulfully sour-with-no-regrets "Sunburn." Revealing (somewhat tongue in cheek) that he recently got engaged, he then flowed into the amazingly biting and funny "Sensitive Song" (I've never heard the term "you whore" sung so sweetly!). To end the evening, he put on his growling (yet cowardly) face on to end the evening with "Mean Ole Lion" from The Wiz.

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight was West End star Liz Robertson, who flew in from London just yesterday. With a few introductory phrases of "On A Clear Day," she established a sweet and lovely introduction to Broadway lyricist Alan Jay Lerner: "renaissance man...a librettist...an author...a wit...a rascal...and...my husband." Back during the days Lerner was working in London, they met after "My Fair Lady," one dinner led to another, and romance struck. However, there were a few differences between herself and him, which led her into the sweetly sour "Why Him?" written by Lerner and Burton Lane from the show Carmelina. She then sang a great combination of the witty "Love With All the Trimmings (written for the film version On a Clear Day) and the lush "Love Before Breakfast" (from Carmelina). To finish the set, Liz sang the powerful, driving, Lerner/Lane "Come Back to Me," made famous by Sammy Davis Jr. On hand to help Liz out was visiting bassist Ritt Henn, who added a lovely texture to Liz's repertoire.

Try not to miss Liz Robertson in "Lerner Without Loewe," a one-time performance this week (Don't Tell Mama, this Thursday April 6, 2017 at 7:30pm) featuring songs that Alan Jay Lerner wrote without his famous musical partner, with Mark Janas on piano and Ritt Henn on bass. Don't miss this master class from musical theater royalty!

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark Janas, ever the collector of talented friends, brought forth two such friends from his past and his present for Classical Corner. On hand - or literally, on vocals - was Soprano Heather Bobeck and on literal hands (and lips) was clarinetist Ed Gilmore, who performed Franz Schubert's "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" ("Shepherd On The Rock") with Mark on piano. Mark first Ed met in college; Mark set up an audition for Ed to perform at a resort hotel, and put two very hard pieces by Brahms down to 'test' Ed, who then proceeded to blow him out of the water and get the job...and they've been friends ever since. Heather came to New York City from North Carolina, and also blew people out of the water this past year by winning the local the Metropolitan Opera District auditions.

Back to "Shepherd on the Rock"! This 1828 piece was composed in the last few months of Schubert's life; he died at age 29, and not very confident in his work. Apparently, at one gathering it was heard that Beethoven was in attendance, and in a panic Schubert ran out of the event hall, unaware that years later, when Beethoven was sick, he looked through a volume of Schubert's work and declared him a genius. "Shepherd on the Rock" is a chamber piece, and uses lieber motifs, or an extensive song utilizing beautiful pastoral imagery. The song itself is the musings of a shepherd with his sheep, a rather boring job, with long hours to wile away. It's split into sections, with the first one having a beautiful lyrical melody with the lyrics translating "on the highest cliff I stand, I sing and the echo floats upward from the dark valley far away....So far from me does my love dwell." The middle section, a more sour and somber melody, reflects "deep grief...my joy is at an end...I'm so lonely here." And then the third changes to a spritely series of musical runs that express the joy of Spring, as the Shepherd makes the choice to go traveling to see his love. It was gorgeous to see the playful echoing of melodies and eventual harmonies taking place between Heather and Ed, between the voice and the clarinet, and how they switched from the sweet to the sour to the sweet effortlessly. As usual, Heather's rich but focused soprano voice made shivers down my arms, and Ed's wonderfully dextrous clarinet thrilled us all.
