The Salon Wrap-up for September 24, 2017: "Vintage Pop"

Matthew Martin Ward was in for Mark Janas this week, who is playing for Ms. Kathleen Turner's show in Philadelphia (woohooo!). The theme for last night was "Vintage Pop," and at the top of the show, Tanya pointed out that Vintage does not necessarily mean "aged" or "old-fashioned," but in fact reflects on the year or quality of an item, like a good bottle of wine.

And thinking of quality... throughout the evening, there were some wonderful mentions and tributes to a cornerstone of the Cabaret community, Barry Levitt, who passed away suddenly this week. The Salon family remembers Barry for his brilliant musicianship and personality, and sends out condolences to his family.

Our Co-Host for the evening was Sylvia Feldman (Robert Ima), who appears nightly in her shower, singing to her dog, "Cha Cha." Sylvia was a hilarious host, whipping quips and jokes around while graciously supporting each singer who came up. She first revealed her ability to spit jokes right and left by entering with the classic Gypsy song "Let Me Entertain You," which got us all in the mood. After remarking on the 90-degree Fall weather today - describing it as a "crisp day to buy a pumpkin" - Sylvia co-hosted excellently throughout the first act! For the top of Act II, Sylvia flourished on stage to sing the broad song (quite broadly), "Where the Boys Are," defending her right to stalk the male persuasion in any way she wished! At the end of the evening, she regaled us with promises of her nut-cracking thighs and then swung into a belligerently hilarious version of "You Don't Own Me." Well, Sylvia owned the stage with that one, no questions asked!

Salon Spotlight!

Amy Wolk, who has won a Bistro Award for Outstanding Musical Comedy as well as two MAC Awards for her sassy and clever cabaret performances, was our Salon Spotlight of the week! She has a trumpet-like voice that perfectly translates funny lyrics and lyric melodies alike. She started out with "Believe it or Not," the theme song from The Great American Hero by Mike Post (music) and Stephen Geyer (lyrics), a song I had never heard the full lyrics of in ages! She then switched into a rawly scathing but jazzily snappy song; "Kiss You Off" by the Scissor Sisters. She completed her set with an original piece of hers that reflected her Anglophilia: "The Brit Song" (music and lyrics by Amy Wolk and William TN Hall) which hilariously paired famous British iconography and pop culture with sexual innuendo (let's just say I'll never think of the Tardis the same way ever again).

Amy Wolk
Amy Wolk (with Stephen Ray Watkins as musical director) will perform "Hungry Like the Wolk" on Sundays, October 1st, 8th, and 15th (all at 7pm). The show (which will include a song written by Wolk and our own Lorinda Lisitza) can be seen at The Duplex, 61 Christopher Street, NYC

Quick Wrap - Matthew's Corner

In his own little corner at the piano, Matthew Martin Ward discussed his definition of "Vintage Pop," in particular a certain late 1960s vintage song style of sudden shifts of harmony, searching for new and interesting harmonic progression. So, now we know what Matthew's high school years sounded like. He spoke about the concept behind "Common tones," which go from one key to a more distant key by keeping one key in the note in common with the harmony. You can read all about this mind-boggling concept on Wikipedia - it takes quite a while to sink in. Matthew also pointed out the concept of "pedal point"; based on how an organ is played, it occurs when the bass line stays in one repeated place while the higher chords move around above it. Matthew exemplified this, and then showed how many times the bridge will have a surprise (sometimes a tritone-filled) section. He illustrated this with the 1967 song "Lazy Day" (the #14 hit by Spanky and Our Gang) and encouraged us to sing along "baby you and me"/"neath the shady tree" He then brought us to classic "vintage" 1914s with the pre-war song "Down Among the Sheltering Palms," composed by Abe Olman with lyrics by James Brockman and Leo Wood, which was recorded by an incredible number of people including the Lyric Quartet, Al Jolson, the Boswell Sisters, Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cain and Bing Crosby. Matthew ended his rendition of this by sliding into a jazzy arrangement originally recorded by Alice May. He then finished his "corner" by pushing even further back into history into truly "vintage" by discussing a famous piece written sometime in the late 1500s about the process of wooing Anne Bolyn (who was known to wear dresses complete with sleeves of green fabric). Gill then took advantage of our speaker system and played Elizabeth Tryon and Matthew's recording of "Greensleeves," which featured beautiful Renaissance accompaniment that morphed into a modern rap!

The Salon Wrap-up for September 17, 2017; "Let's Misbehave"

Hi Saloners,

It was an evening of surprises, beginning with the surprise that Mark wasn't there. Unfortunately he was a little under the weather, so he decided to get some rest (we all hope you're feeling better Mark!). Instead, we had a very special guest host/pianist, the fabulous Tracy Stark! While we missed Mark, it's always a lot of fun to hang out with Tracy.

Our special guest co-host this week was the fabulous Leslie Orofino! Leslie just finished a run of her show Cocktails With Cole, a tribute to Cole Porter, which she performed in both New York and Connecticut.

She opened the evening with the song that inspired tonight's theme, Cole Porter's "Let's Misbehave" and gave it the appropriate inappropriateness. She opened the second set with "Give Him the Ooh La La", which Cole Porter wrote after moving to Paris, when his first show flopped in America. Paris revealed a lot about Cole Porter, which Leslie then showed us with the song "You Don't Know Paree", before finishing the set with "C'est Magnifique", which was inspired by Cole's walks down the Champs-Élysées watching people fall in and out of love. She closed the evening with "Confession", bringing another evening of Salon fabulousness to a close without anybody misbehaving too badly.

Salon Spotlight!
Our Salon Spotlight tonight was the always stunning Shana Farr! Shana opened her new show this week at the Players' Club, "Shana Farr sings the Songbook of Barbara Cook". It was a wonderful match of singer and songs. Shana pointed out that Barbara Cook was the quintessential ingenue, but always gave the character depth. She illustrated this with two Rodgers and Hammerstein classics, "A Wonderful Guy" from South Pacific and "Hello Young Lovers" from The King and I. Shana then related how, later in her career, Barbara met and worked with Stephen Sondheim, which changed her life, before closing her set with a haunting rendition of "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music.

Quick Wrap - Tracy's Corner
Since Mark wasn't here this week to do Classical Corner, the reins were handed over to the marvelous Tracy Stark, who sang three of her own original songs. (Always a treat!). "You Changed Me" was a wonderful song about a "woman of a certain age" (Tracy's words) surrendering to love. She then shared a song that was commissioned for a show dealing largely with midnight. The show didn't end up happening, but Tracy has since recorded the song, so we were all lucky enough to hear "Mr. Moon". She closed with a song that was commissioned for a gala for a women's shelter and was a beautiful song about rising from the ashes, "Find My Strength".

The Salon Wrap-Up for September 10, 2017: "Better Than Nothing"

We've been very lucky in New York City as other cities have been dealing with fires, flooding and hurricane winds. Our Salon founder Mark Janas reminded us of this as he played the audio from video during the hurricane in Puerto Rico last week. It was a very humbling experience and made me even more grateful to be able to gather on a weekly music to make beautiful music with beautiful email.

Our Co-Host was the Multiple MAC Award Winning Singer/Songwriter Bill Zeffiro! The evening doubled as our regular Sunday Salon and an album release party for Mr Zeffiro! We were thrilled to find that the first 20 people to arrive at Salon received a CD absolutely free. What a wonderful gift!

Salon Co-Host Bill Zeffiro
Bill's first song was delivered at the piano, his delicately jazzy original tune, "Better Than Nothing." He told us that this one of the first sings he developed at The Salon, and it was so wonderful to hear it again as a kick off to the evening. For his mid-show set, he invited a few of his favorite singers to join him at the mic. For his first song, he and Sarah Hayes sang what has become my favorite holiday tune, "What The Hell It's Christmas." He then introduced us to something "totally different", an aria from a new chamber opera called, "Truman and Nancy" set during the tie encapsulated in Truman Capote's book "In Cold Blood." The touching song was sung by young soprano, Abby Hase. He closed this set with the sassy title tune of his musical, "The Road To Ruin" sung with aplomb by Candice Oden (with Bill and Erin - yours truly - on backups.) For the final song of the night, Bill sang a song that was created back when The Salon was still at the Algonquin: "Universal Truth."

If you're interested in getting a copy of Bill's CD, you can reach out to him via email (they're not on sale online quite yet!) You can catch Bill at La Rivista – 313 West 46th St, NYC 10036 - every Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8pm-Midnight and at Parnell’s – 350 East 53rd St, NYC 10022 - every Saturday 8-11pm. Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

This week's segment started with Mark asking for the lights to be turned up slightly. He asked the audience for a show of hands: Who has taken voice lessons? (Most people raised their hands.) And who has taught voice? (About 1/4 of the hands stayed raised.) He then told a story about his journey as a musician/teacher and reluctant singer. After being a part of his church choir as a music director for many years, he recently started singing with the choir here and there and now his voice is starting to do things it never did before. He realized that there is sometimes a difference between teaching something and being able to do exactly what you're teaching.

As tonight's Classical Corner approached Mark realized that Bill Zeffiro was going to be co-hosting, and he was reminded of a conversation he and Bill had. Bill has always said that Mark can have a voice lesson anytime. So Mark had the brilliant idea to do a voice lesson with Bill in front of the entire audience this evening!

Bill started by having Mark sing a bit of a song he'd prepared, which allowed Bill to pinpoint a few spots to address. Through Bill's work with Mark, we learned about the trick of using a straw to practice proper breath control. We learned about biting a mint (or your finger) to sing without the (over)use of your jaw. We learned that voiced consonants (doing notes on a song on a "th" "ng", for example) can regulate vocal energy. And we were shown a few vocal eases and body movements that would help bring it all together. Not only did we get to see Bill as a fun, engaging, loving teacher with a great skill set, but we also got to see a Mark as a voice student who showed blind courage, didn't judge himself, and expressed a wonder and joy of learning.

The funny thing? I asked Mark later what it was like to get a voice lesson in front of everyone, because he seems to at ease. But he said he was terrified! This really inspired me because I think most of us feel that way when working on our craft, but Mark and Bill showed us that learning and growing can be quite fun.
