The Salon Wrap-Up for January 28, 2018: "Broadway Legends"

It was a a completely packed room at Salon this Sunday night, as singers and cabaret fans opted to celebrate Grammy night with us. We were thrilled to welcome back producer Tanya Moberly after she was away directing a show in Los Angeles. And she leapt back into action, as you can see from this photo where she's fixing our piano bench!

Producer: Tanya Moberly

After getting the evening under way, Tanya and Mark ushered in tonight's theme: BROADWAY LEGENDS. Our Co-Host was Bistro & Julie Wilson Award Winner Shana Farr, with her pianist Jon Weber! Shana started the evening with a beautiful, "Till There Was You" from The Music Man. Between verses of the song Shana began to tell us about the legendary Barbara Cook, the subject of her upcoming show and inspiration for our theme. For her mid-show set, she began with a medley which included songs like "This Is All Very New To Me," from Plain and Fancy, "Goodnight My Someone" from The Music Man, and "Will He Like Me" from She Loves Me. She followed that with a delicate and expressive "Anyone Can Whistle" from the musical of the same name. To complete this set she told us a story about Barbara Cook's ability to take the troubles of her life and pour them into her art - and then sang a heartbreaking, "Losing My Mind" from Follies. To end the evening, she sang an upbeat (and aptly-placed-in-the-show), "It's Not Where You Start, It's Where You Finish" which sent us home in the best of moods.

Shana will be at Feinstein’s/54 Below – 254 West 54th St, NYC 10019 – in THE SONGBOOK OF BARBARA COOK on Saturday, February 3rd at 9:30pm. For more information: www.shanafarr.com / www.54below.com

Co-Host: Shana Farr

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight features Carole Demas (the original Sandy in GREASE) and Sarah Rice (the original Johanna in SWEENEY TODD)! Carole and Sarah have also both played Luisa in THE FANTASTICKS. They started their set with the lovely, "My Cup Runneth Over" in duet form. Then we had a real treat - both lovely ladies gave us songs they originated - Sarah sang "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from Sweeney Todd, and Carole sang "Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife. They finished their set with the Jones/Schmidt tune, "Celebration," with Joe helping on backing vocals.

Carole and Sarah return to The Laurie Beechman Theatre – 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – in THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE, their critically acclaimed tribute to Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt on Sunday, February 4th at 1pm & Thursday, February 8th at 7pm. Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark Janas kicked off this week's Classical Corner by introducing us to baritone Mark Watson and composer Robert Cohen. Robert shared the history of the songs we were about to hear - for most of his music, he chooses poems from the 18th and 19th century and puts them to music. Tonight's songs were poems by Shelley and Wordsworth and were absolutely stunning.

The Salon Wrap-Up for January 21, 2017- "Your Cheating Heart"

We were thrilled to have a full roster of singer for tonight's Salon event! Mark Janas acknowledged the crowd and shared that we had a great executive board meeting recently that will be bringing some exciting changes and update to Salon. More information will be given out in the coming weeks. One big push is that we're actively welcoming new members to Salon, so please invite people you know who might enjoy our open mic with a family feel.

Our producer Tanya Moberly is away directing a sho in LA, so we were honored to have board members Sue Matsuki as our guest producer (and she did a FANTASTIC job keeping the full night of singing running smoothly.)

Our Co-Host was Andrea Bell Wolf, with Matthew Martin Ward on piano! Andrea is a Broadway veteran and has performed on various TV shows like the Ed Sullivan show among others. To start her set, Andrea brought her powerful and sultry alto to the hilarious comedy song, "If." For her mid show set, she started with a sassy tune written for her by the late, great Barry Levitt with lyricist Peter Napolitano - "Prisoner of Love." She followed that with a heartbreaking, "Guess Who I Saw Today?" Then the audience got very quite for her powerful, "Could I Leave You" from Follies. To close the evening, she gave us a song from the Broadway show she's best known for, "So Long Dearie" from Hello, Dolly!

Andrea will be at Don’t Tell Mama – 343 West 46th St, NYC 10036 – with her show PRISONER OF LOVE on February 3rd at 8pm. For more information: www.donttellmamanyc.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark Janas started this week's Classical Corner by playing through a bit of Musetta's famous melody from the opera, La Boheme. He then invited the lovely Shana Farr to join him on the stage to explain the plot and sing the aria. They then moved on to The Merry Widow, with the delicate and beautiful, aria "Vilia." For the last song of Classical Corner, Shana sang a song that was written as a parody of an opera aria from the musical, Candide - the virtuoso "Glitter and Be Gay."

The Salon Wrap-Up for January 14, 2018: "ancestry.song"

At the start of tonight's Salon found and host Mark Janas bounded to the stage to welcome his chosen family to the warm and loving evening. Tonight's theme was "ancestry.song" (a riff on www.ancestry.com) and I was excited to hear what choices people came up with. Would they regale us with songs from their homeland or sing about family? Would there be humor in addition to pathos? One thing was for certain - there were many surprises!

Our Co-Host was Ari Axelrod, with Multiple MAC Award Winner Alex Rybeck on piano. Ari explained that there were three pillars to hemself - Judaism, musical theater, and family. And what better way to celebrate those things through song? Ari started his three song set with a lovely rendition of "Something's Coming" from Bernstein's West Side Story. He followed that by an excellently told story song, "Shiksa Goddess" from The Last Five Years. He finished the first set with a slow and contemplative, "Will You Still Love Me?" In the second half he sung of dreams and hopes with, "Who I'd Be." He closed the show with moving, personal story about what he's most proud about being Jewish - generation to generation, "L'Dor Vador."

What was also fun about the evening is that Ari asked all of the performers to share some stories about their ancestry, so we got to know Salon guests at a much deeper level than ever before. Thanks for the great idea, Ari!

Co-Host Ari Axelrod

Ari will be workshopping a new one man show at The Jewish Heritage Museum in Battery Park in February and performing his solo show TAKING THE WHEEL, directed by Tony Award Winner Faith Prince and musically directed by Alex Rybeck, in St. Louis in March. He will also be at 54 Below – 254 West 54th St, NYC 10019 - on March 17th at 11:30pm with WEBSTER CONSERVATORY MUSICAL THEATRE CLASS OF 2018. For more information: www.ariaxelrod.com

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight featured Mama’s Next Big Act Top Five Finalist Gracie Lee Brown, with her bestie Thomas Hodges on piano. They began with "Sunlight", a beautiful tune written by Thomas and powerfully performed by Gracie. She followed that with a hilarious parody medley from Les Miserables called, "One Gay More" - all about a straight girl falling for gay men time after time. She finished her set with a delicate, original tune, "Brick by Brick" with lyrics by Gracie and music by Thomas, with Thomas adding additional vocals.

Gracie will be at The Duplex – 61 Christopher St, NYC 10014 – in GOODNIGHT, GRACIE – THE MANY FACED GODDESS on January 28th at 4:30pm. For more information: www.theduplex.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark started Classical Corner by holding a mic up to a mini speaker system playing the beginning of Bach's 5th Brandenberg Concerto - a piece produced for a solo instrument with a large group of instruments behind it. Mark said that the 6 concerti Bach wrote essentially noted the beginning of what we know as the orchestra. Back in Bach's day, the harmonies were played much like a jazz player does now - the musician uses the written symbols on the score to know the chord and then fills in the harmony with his own interpretation.

Mark said that there are many unique aspects to Bach's pieces. First, in these concerti there were many solo instruments throughout. Mark demonstrated different ways that notes would be emphasized - either by making them loud or soft, or by changing the tempo of the music at specific times. Also with Bach, the pianist's hands have to talk to one another rather than being independent, because both hands are as busy as one another - there is no dominant hand.

After speaking a bit more about the background of the music, Mark played one of the cadenza's live for the audience to enjoy (which he said that for many years he used as a warm up!) And while he had 6 note-filled pages of music laid out in front of him, he often looked away as the feeling of music went throughout his body. It was thrilling to watch!

He finished the segment by playing a recording of the orchestra leading into the cadenza he just played, with the harpsichord taking the lead. I have a new appreciation for how impressive the musicianship is. He also capped the segment by letting us know that this is the perfect music to play while trying to clean your house - it's THAT rousing!
