Sneak Peek: Classical Corner

Mark kicked off tonight’s Classical Corner “with a little something” on the piano. When he asked the audience what the piece was, no one could guess. And that’s because Mark improvised it! Mark’s resolution is to compose more, and he said that much of composing includes a little bit of improvisation. (Have you ever wondered where Schubert’s “Impromptu”s came from?)

So, how do you organize improvisation for the piano? Mark gave us a couple of ideas: Theme. Pattern. Chord structure. Meter. And Pianist “ornaments” - the things you know you have in your repertoire as an artist that you can pull out and know will be successful.

With that Mark, invited all of the composers in the room to come to the piano to improvise to the theme, “Auld Lang Syne.” And one by one, the pianists improvised and then handed off the keys without skipping a beat. First was Mark, then Matthew Martin Ward, then Christian Talbott-Sutin, then Bryon Sommers. The song culminated in a 4-person/8-handed finale, which received a huge standing ovation from the crowd. HAPPY NEW YEAR to our Salon family!

---------

A few things you may find different from The Salon Blog in 2014. Here is an update regarding a few structural changes which will take place on the blog starting in 2014.

From now on, the blog will take a more streamlined approach to encapsulate what each Salon night entailed. It will now simply state what the Theme was, who Co-Hosted, who was the Salon Spotlight, what Classical Corner was about and then will list the performing members that were in attendance that night. Below that will be a list of the upcoming shows of ONLY the people who attended that evening. The Blogette of each evening will still be at the door to collect monies but will take minimal notes - so make sure he or she has all song and show information written on the signup cards when you fill it out. Thank you!
