The Salon Wrap-Up for April 13, 2014- "Birds of a Feather - Songbirds and Spring"

April 13, 2014
Theme: “Birds of a Feather - Songbirds and Spring”

New York did not let us down tonight, making sure that we had warm weather as we geared up for tonight's theme: Songbirds and Spring. And the atmosphere was just as lovely indoors, due in part to our illustrious co-host - the charming and silky voiced Celia Berk! Celia’s brand new CD, YOU CAN’T RUSH SPRING is arranged and conducted by Alex Rybeck and co-produced by Tony Award-winning sound designer Scott Lehrer.  It will be released in May, and a pre-release excerpt has been played by Jonathan Schwartz on WNYC/93.9 FM.  A free download of the title track is available now at www.GramercyNightingale.com. For more information: www.Facebook.com/CeliaBerkMusic

Sneak Peek: Classical Corner

Mark started this week’s Classical Corner with Beethoven’s 6th. Why? Because at the end of the 2nd movement Beethoven represents birds, including the cuckoo and the nightingale. (He also told us that the word cello means “bird” - who knew?) Mark invited one of his students, Nick Miller, up to sing the first aria by Papageno, the bird catcher character in The Magic Flute.

Next, Mark brought up the immensely prolific Sarah Rice to since a rare Cole Porter tune, “When I Was a Cuckoo.” She stayed on the stage to sing the song that created her indelible mark in the musical theater world - “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” from Sweeney Todd. To finish out the set, Sarah was joined on the stage by Celia Berk to sing the famous duet from the opera, Lakme.
