Sneak Peek: Classical Corner
Mark Janas, our amazing founder and host, started Classical Corner by playing a recording of an orchestra version of Brahms’ 2nd piano concerto in B flat. Brahms came to mind as he planned this week’s classical corner because the anniversary of Brahms’ birth was May 7.
Tonight’s classical corner was a tribute to the rhapsody. According to Merriam Webster, a rhapsody is defined as “a piece of music that is meant to express a lot of emotion and does not have a regular form.” mark started by talking about some of the elements that make rhapsodies stand out from other pieces of music:
- Emphasis on bass / left hand
- “2 against 3” - the left hand is in 2, with the right hand in 3
- Harmonic richness. Mark says it, “mines the piano for depth of harmony and sound.”
- Integration of piano and orchestra (where the instruments blend rather than standing out opposite one another.)
Mark played excerpts from Brahms 1st Rhapsody to illustrate the above elements.
To close out the set, Mark played Brahms’ 2nd Rhapsody “Opus 79 #1” in B minor and “Opus 79 #2” in G minor.
