The Salon Wrap-Up for July 20, 2014 - "Summer Salsa"

July 20, 2014
Theme: “Summer Salsa: A Celebration of All Things Latin”

I don’t think I have ever been at The Salon with such a festive, sizzling theme! (There was a lot of hip shaking as people shimmied in their chairs!) Our Co-Host was Dancer, Singer, Actor, Artist, Image Maker & MAC Award Nominee Joey Infante! Joey will be at The Metropolitan Room – 34 West 22nd St, NYC 10010 – with his new show AMOR August 12th & August 26th at 7pm. For more information: www.metropolitanroom.com

Co-Host Joey Infante
Our Salon Spotlight was pianist, Viktoriya Papayani. Born in the Ukraine, Viktoriya was started on the piano by her father, Vladimir Yudilevich, when she was four and studied with him until her family moved to America in 1997. She continued her studies in New York at the Lucy Moses School and the Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Papayani was presented at the Weill Hall of Carnegie Hall in her New York recital debut by Artists International as a recipient of its Special Presentation Award. Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

When hearing salsa, you automatically think Spanish & Latin flavor/roots. To kick off Classical Corner, Mark Janas invited up Matthew Martin Ward to introduce songs of composer, Darius Milhaud, who was a famous part of “Les Six” (pronounced “ lay cease”), a group of 6 French composers in the 1920s. Milhaud traveled around Latin America as he assisted an Ambassador to Brazil, the result of which was music that had a Habanera type flair (with prominent dance rhythms.) After this wonderful history lesson, Matthew played 3 movements from the “Saudades do Brasil” suite: “VIII: Tijuca”; “IX: Sumare”; and “XI: Laranjeiras.”

Mark was brought back to the piano to talk more about Latin themes in music. In addition to rhythm, the thing that distinguishes Latin music is the scale of the music - notably what’s known as the Spanish scale or Gypsy scale. Mark distinguished the melodic minor scale from the harmonic minor scale (showing how certain notes are skipped to give them their distinction.) To demonstrate, Mark played “Andaluza” by Enrique Granados, the 5th piece in a group of twelve Spanish dances.

To wrap up Classical Corner, Mark played “Malagueña,” a 1928 classical piece by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona - which has actually been popularized by Connie Francis, Jose Feliciano, Ritchie Valens, and singers in over 7 different languages (thank you, Wikipedia, for the info!)

The Salon Wrap-Up for July 13, 2014 - "Come As You Are"

July 13, 2014
Theme: “Come As You Are: An Anything Goes Potpourri”

This is the first time in a long while that we’ve had such an open-ended theme, so I’ve been really looking forward to seeing what people had up their sleeves! And, I tell you, we weren’t disappointed!

Our Co-Hosts were Multiple MAC, Bistro & Nightlife Award Winners Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano! Eric and Barbara are the New York nightclub world’s most celebrated team. From Carnegie Hall & Lincoln Center to Birdland & London’s Crazy Coqs, their electrifying combination of warmth, wit, swing and sensuality led The New York Times to rave, “Exhilarating … Mr. Comstock and Ms. Fasano are turning the neighborhood into a hotbed of pleasure.” This coming August marks their 10th wedding anniversary, and they’re celebrating all year long! Eric is appearing every Tuesday night at New York’s hottest new venue, Café Noctambulo at Pangea. Eric & Barbara return to Birdland on August 17 & September 29, and will be appearing at Neue Galerie & the Cabaret Convention in October. For more information, please visit Eric’s website at www.ericcomstock.net and Barbara’s website at www.humanchild.com
Co-Hosts Barbara Fasano & Eric Comstock!
Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark Janas started with a request: Previous Salon sponsor Father Jeff Hamblin is celebrating his birthday in Gay Paris, and Mark asked us to sing Happy Birthday while he recorded us so that he can send it to Father Jeff as a thank you for all of his support.

After the song (which put us in an even more festive mood than before!) Mark started Classical Corner by saying that our theme of potpourri and “come as you are” created almost too many options. In the end he settled on one piece that was a potpourri in a lot of different ways: Mozart’s “Fantasy #4 in C minor” (written in May 1785)

Mark described this song as a piece that wanders and has a lot of different ideas all rolled into one - radical key changes throughout with lots of opportunities for interpretive dynamics. Mark went on to explain that depending on which notes are emphasized more or less heavily, a piano can mimic the dynamic ability that singers have (despite being a percussion instrument.) He demonstrated what a piece might sound like with no dynamics, or even ill-placed dynamics, which was fascinating. He then played the full piece which was truly enchanting! Classical Corner continues to be on the most innovative sets in the NY cabaret community - how lucky for us that we get to enjoy it each week!

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark started by translating the German word “lied” which means “song.” He talked about the theme, “You, Me & We” as being about collaborations - certainly, Mark has a relationship with his piano, but as he thought about what to present for Classical Corner, he wanted to think more about collaborations between artists. So, he started talking about how a pianist backs up a singer, which is not just playing the piano but swelling when the singer swells in the music and becoming more delicate when the singer adds more subtlety. This is where the German word, “lied” came in - the classic German art song.

Mark next talked about a song from Schubert’s Faust which featured a distraught woman named Gretchen who was sitting at her spinning wheel. He talked about the amount of emotion within the notes on the page of this song (including a repeated note which simulates the young woman’s quickening heart) - the emotion of the musical line and the pianist’s finesse of the music naturally enhances the emotionality of the singer’s performance - a true artistic collaboration.

With that, he brought up a young singer, Maria Fernando Brea, who he asked to sing Schubert’s “Gretchen At The Spinning Wheel” (English translation) from Faust. After the song was complete, he talked about how his piano was like a spinning wheel upon which the singer could play - a true accompaniment instrument. In contrast, he next had her sing Rachmoninov’s “Oh Please Do Not Sing To Me Again” (English translation), a song based on famous German poem, with a melodic line that sounds like a haunting, Russian folk song. After Maria sang this song so beautifully, Mark talked about how the second song was more of a volley - the singer and piano traded solos and melodies back and forth.

To complete Classical Corner, Maria sang and Mark played another Rachmoninov song, this one based on the Maria Dadidova poem “I Wait For Thee.” It was a glorious 3 songs set of art songs that has our audience roaring with appreciation!
