The Salon Wrap-Up for February 8, 2015 - "The Nature of Women & Women In Nature"

February 8, 2015
Theme: “The Nature of Women & Women In Nature”

The room was packed to see our amazing guest performers, Salon regulars and newbies - so full to the brim, in fact, that we had to add chairs!

Our Co-Host was MAC, Bistro & Nightlife Award Winner Carolyn Montgomery-Forant! Carolyn will be at The Laurie Beechman Theater - 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – in VISIBLE PHOENIX Fridays, March 3rd, April 10th & May 8th. All shows at 7pm. For more information: www.carolynmontgomeryforant.com

To kick off the evening Carolyn invited up 3 beautiful ladies with equally beautiful voices, first to sing Carolyn’s original tune, “Mean Girls” followed by a doo-wop version of “If Ever I Would Leave You” from Camelot. For her mid-show set Carolyn gave us a hilarious “The Bear, The Tiger, The Hamster and the Mole” followed by a powerful “Could I Leave You” from Sondheim’s Follies. For the final song of the evening, Carolyn sang her charming original tune “Lady Phoenix.”

Our Salon Spotlight was the effervescent Robin Kradles (with Rick Jensen on piano!) Robin will be hosting a new series of group shows entitled THE DIVA SELECTIONS. First up is MY LEADING MEN featuring Bob Diamond, Joshua Dixon, Rick Jensen, Kristoffer Lowe, Sidney Myer & Lennie Watts at Don’t Tell Mama – 346 West 46th St, NYC 10036 – on February 22nd at 3pm. For more information: www.robinkradles.com

For her set, Robin started with a rousing, “Alright, Ok, You Win” and followed that by a contemplative, “Stars and the Moon” from Songs for a New World. She finished her set with a fantastic, “13 Men.”

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner

Mark started this week’s Classical Corner by talking about the importance of women in opera. He started with an amusing statement - there’s a common theory that if a writer wants to have a successful project they should know to center the story around a women, because the women is the emotional lifeblood of any piece of writing. With that, he invited up one of his most promising opera students (and one of my favorites to ever visit The Salon), Maria Fernanda Brea, to sing “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta” from the Puccini opera, La Rondine. Her performance was truly breathtaking.

He then invited up Paul Keightly to share Leporello’s aria “Madamina, il catalogo è questo” (or The Catalogue aria) from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, which he first sung in English to give us context and then completed in Italian. The song was hilarious, highlighting the folly of womanizing.
