The Salon Wrap-Up for July 31, 2016 - "Yearning For More"

Mark Janas began last night's Salon with an RIP to Marni Nixon, who was on everyone's mind as a major loss to the Broadway and Musical Theater community. She was even some audience members' personal friend and teacher, so lots of love and emotion on Marni's passing was felt.

To complement this, the theme was the heart-pulling and bittersweet "Yearning For More," but we couldn't ask for more with Guest Co-Host Sandra Bargman, who has worked on Broadway, National Tours, Cruise Ships, Cabaret...you name it...and is a songwriter to boot! With Ian Herman at the piano, she started out with the glorious ballad "On A Clear Day" with powerhouse vocals. For her Act II set, Sandra bellowed and cakewalked through "Great Big Baby." Her next tune was the quintessential yearning song, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen. She then brought her bluesy songwriting skills (and soulful vocals to boot) to her song "Don't Call It Spirits For Nothin'." Her final song of the evening was "I Can See Clearly Now," sung in a a driven train-track rhythm'd piano, expertly played by Ian Herman.

Sandra Bargman will be in "Shakin' It Real!" in a CD release party of "The Edge of Every Day" at The Metropolitan Room on September 18th, at 4:00 pm.

Salon Spotlight: Kathleen Turner

Kathleen Turner
Um, so...yeah...Kathleen Turner. With her signature voice, beauty, acerbic wit and slew of starring roles in movies and television titles a mile long, it was no wonder we were thrilled to have her as our Salon Spotlight that Sunday evening! She brought her sultry tones and twinkles in her eyes first to the lilting "Let's Fall in Love" by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. She then went into a song she has always loved, "Since I Fell For You" (originally written by Buddy Johnson in 1945). Kathleen then admitted she always wanted to sing in New York since her youth, but never thought she'd ever be a "soprano," and so she went into acting...and it turned out pretty well for her. She finished her set with the wistfully positive "You Must Believe in Spring" by Bill Evans, and made us all yearn for a full set of songs sometime in the near future!

Quick Wrap: Classical Corner:

The word for "yearning" brought up to Mark a multitude of meanings, from the lyrics and the melody of Bernstein's "Somewhere" to the melody of the Theme to "Gone With the Wind" - in these songs, there's a reaching in the octave jump, a look toward another land or another love or another life. Mark brought in a friend: David Shenton is as talented on piano as he is on violin, and accompanied Mark on violin on Chopin's Prelude in E minor, which features a high reaching arches that complement the feeling of loss, with stretched long notes and melodic falls in the bass notes. Distant harmonies create a feeling of things kept apart (and David even sang a few notes of "How Insensitive," showing off what parts of the melody Antônio Carlos Jobim lovingly homaged).

Mark then brought out an arrangement of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings for David and himself of this piece - an elegy which has harmonies and dissonances that resolve into growing climaxes of volume. It's an intense string sound when the orchestra in full plays, but David's beautiful sustaining notes communicated the aching quality of the song in perfect, painfully gorgeous ways. When David's violin reached a high sustained note in a long forte, the audience seemed to hold its breath, and was only allowed to release it when the violin dropped to a lower note and continued, itself heartbroken.

Mini-Classical Corner Alert! I have to mention that David Shenton and his wife, Erin Shields, performed in the second act, one right after the other. On the piano, David performed a ridiculous (and I mean, ridiculous) improv on the song "All of Me" after the audience yelled out a few composers at him, but then topped himself in ridiculous talent by doing his own breakdown of the same song on BOTH PIANO AND VIOLIN AT THE SAME TIME (you can see a similar performance here). It brought about a standing O and several prostrated bows of admiration from the audience. But then, Erin came up to the stage and, in a full and gorgeous soprano, sang "Al Di La." in both English and Italian. That household has so much talent, it's ridiculous. Ridiculous.

David and Erin, along with Giuseppe Spoletini, have a trio group called "O Sole Trio" at the Highline Ballgame August 14th at 12:30 pm and then will tour the Midwest in September and October.
