The Salon Wrap-Up for March 5, 2017 - "Around The World"

We had a completely packed house for this week's Salon, bringing a much needed warmth to the frigid evening. So it was wonderful to have a theme that allowed us to imagine being in the glow of sun soaked skies - "Around The World."

Our Co-Hosts were Michael Garin & Mardie Millit! Michael won an Outer Circle Critics Award & a Drama Desk Award for SONG OF SINGAPORE (he was co-writer and co-star) and Mardie has numerous stage credits including creating the role of Jenny "Iceberg" Ericson in the stage adaptation of Academy Award winner William Peter Blatty's JOHN GOLDFARB, PLEASE COME HOME!

Michael and Mardie started the evening with a boisterous and fun, "Mustafa, Mustafa". To start their mid-show set, Mardie brought us a powerful ode to refugees with a song in French & English "by a Spanish Jew Greek Armenian" Enrico Macias - "Juif Espanol." The second song Michael called the "Yiddish theater orange blossom special" - the playful, "Rumania, Rumania" which got people clapping right along! The last song of the midshow set was a adorable, swinging duet version of "King of the Road." To close the evening, Michale and Mardi sang a beautiful medley they call, "American Tune" which included the Bach chorale, "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden."

You can find Michael & Mardie at The Roxy Hotel – 2 Avenue of the Americas, NYC 10013 - Michael every Tuesday-Friday 5-7pm / and every Saturday 6-8pm. Their CD “HEY LOOK, IT’S MICHAEL & MARDIE!” is available on CDBaby, iTunes and Amazon, along with Michael’s solo CDs “THE SONG OF THE ALPHA MALE" and "TULSA IS JUST A SLUT SPELLED BACKWARDS."

Co-Hosts: Michael Garin and Mardie Millit

Our Salon Spotlight featured the wonderful Robin Westle! Robin, looking sassy in her black fedora and blazer, started her three song set with Stephen Sondheim's upbeat, "Everybody Says Don't" from Anyone Can Whistle. She followed that with the charming song, "The Story of Jessie." She had the audience clapping along and cheering with her set-closer, "You Gotta Ring Them Bells."

Robin will return to The Laurie Beechman Theatre – 407 West 42nd St, NYC 10036 – in THE ADVENTURES OF TAFFY LONGVUE on March 9th at 7pm. For more information: westbankcafe.com/laurie-beechman-theatre

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark Janas invited Sarah Rice to join him for Classical Corner this week to enjoy the amazing sounds of the theremin, along with her stunning voice. The first song they did together was a traditional Celtic folk song that Sarah called a riddle song. The second song, "Apres Une Reve" was in French so Mark started with the English translation before Sarah played through it's haunting melody on the theremin. The last piece was a fantasia on "Greensleeves" written for the piano and theremin. Mark told us this piece was rumored to have been written by Henry VIII - did you know that? (I didn't!) It was an amazing evening of art and learning.
