The Salon Wrap-up for February 18, 2018: "Everybody Has a Hungry Heart"

What a wonderful theme to prepare for this week, as we welcomed songs related to, "Everybody Has a Hungry Heart." Some brought in songs of longing, some brought rock music, and some brought songs from Bruce Springsteen himself. This evening's Co-Host was the effervescent Leanne Borghesi, with Bryan Sommers on piano! Leanne started the evening with a swinging and powerful, "Mambo Haliano." For her mid-show set she started with a great story-song medley of "Tap Your Troubles Away" (from Mack and Mabel) and "Lighten Up" with some exciting vocals and fun audience participation. She then wooed and seduced us with a sensational rendition of "Bring On The Men" from Jekyll & Hyde. At the end of the night, Leanne asked Mark Janas to accompany her on her thrilling version of "Come Rain or Come Shine" which absolutely wowed the audience. We were so lucky to have this talent with is this evening!

Co-Host Leanne Borghesi!

Leanne will be at The Triad – 158 West 72nd St, NYC 10023 – in MOOD SWINGS on Monday, March 19th & Monday April 16th. Both shows at 7pm. For more information: www.thetriadnyc.com / www.leanneborghesi.com

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight was lovely Lisa Viggiano! This sweet voiced soprano started her set with a medley of "Hungry Heart" and "Dancing in the Dark." She then took a departure from Bruce Springsteen to sing a delicate and tantalizing mix of, "Good Morning Heartache" and "Think." She finished her set telling a story about her history with Bruce before giving us a fun and nostalgia-inspiring, "Born To Run."

Lisa will be at The Duplex – 61 Christopher St, NYC 10014 – LISA VIGGIANO SINGS BRUCE ON CHRISTOPHER on Saturday, February 24th & Sunday, February 25th. Both shows at 6:30pm. For more information: www.theduplex.com

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

Mark Janas, who teaches at Manhattan School of Music, told us about his wonderful class in the current 2018 program. The students are charged with creating an opera blending musical theater and opera themes, in an effort to make opera more accessible to a wider audience. First, they started with the tunes of shows like, "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Hairspray", and then knew they needed to add something from opera. Mark was taken back to the time when he became familiar with a certain trio from the opera, Cosi Fan Tutte (which was featured prominently in the Glenda Jackson "Sunday, Bloody Sunday.") So they took inspiration from its aria, "Soave il Vento" (translated roughly as "O Gentle Wind Blowing") and added new lyrics to suit this new hybrid show. To illustrate, Mark invited Zach Wobensmith up to the piano who sang through the baritone line of the song. He also played through a few sections of the song while talking about elements of Mozart's music - including deceptive cadences that never resolve the way you expect them to! And to cap the segment, he plugged his phone into some speakers and played a version of the song fully orchestrated with 3 voices. It was wonderful!
