The Salon Wrap-up for March 11, 2018: "Songs That Have Bazazz"

With a Theme like "Songs that Have Bazzaz," it was no wonder the evening was full of energy and spunk. The term "Bazzaz" is from a song Kay Thompson wrote, something to do with joie de vivre, and we had a lot of joyful living on the stage! The joy we felt for each other was also passed on to the memory of the late Dana Lorge, Barry Levitt, and Charlotte Patton, all of whom certainly had bazzaz, and Mark made sure to dedicate the evening's musical joy to them.

The originally scheduled Co-Host Rick Skye was taken ill, so we had the pleasure of having Ann Kittredge as our Replacement Co-Host Extraordinaire, who stepped into Rick's heels for the evening. She was up to the last-minute challenge: "All you need is Pizzaz!" as her dad used to tell her. Well, close enough! Ann is a 2018 MAC Female Debut Nominee, and with her rich soprano and effortless belt (she reminds me of the late Jan Maxwell in look and talent!), coupled with her energetic spirit, she made for a great Co-Host!

Ann began the bazzaz by singing "Everybody Wants to Do a Musical" from Nick and Nora, and expertly threw in a little Rocky Horror Picture Show and South Pacific as well. For the second act set, Broadway pianist Larry Yurman took over for Mark at the piano to play for Ann. She began in a lilting French with the waltz "Chanson." from The Baker's Wife by Stephen Schwartz, and cleverly got the audience to sing the "la la la" section of "Sing a Song" to end it! She then opened up her tender side to croon "Strangest Thing" from Kander and Ebb's The Act, showing off her rich mix and supple, fully-controlled voice. She continued with the Kander and Ebb theme with "And the World Goes Round," starting in a deep alto and then rising into end in a fiery belt. At the end of the evening, Ann graciously returned at the end of the evening to encourage support, love and musical joy within our community, and then left us with the hilariously frantic "The Last Song." And indeed, it was!

You can see why Ann was nominated for a MAC Award by seeing "Another Night Only" on Monday, March 19th at 7pm - directed by Richard Jay-Alexander with music direction by Larry Yurman, at The Laurie Beechman Theatre,  407 West 42nd St, NYC.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

When Mark considered the concept of bazzaz, he interpreted it as music that inherently contained an "outward kind of drama," pieces with sharp corners and interesting colors, stops and starts, fits and spurts of dramatic flair to its personality. So he found a piece with a lot of sparkle, "MalagueƱa" by Ernesto Lecuona. Mark played this solo on the piano, and one could hear the fireworks and raging waters within its Spanish tonalities and flowing melodies.

Then Mark brought to light the ultimate lady with bazzaz, the titular heroine of Carmen. Janice Hall sang the ultimate aria from this ultimate opera, "Habanera." The Habanera rhythm itself emerged from an African rhythm, and once it came through the island of Cuba, it eventually became the Tango. Carmen the opera was written in French but takes place in Spain, and the "Habanera" aria took advantage of the combination of the romantic French language of "l'amour" with the hot, sensual pulse of this Afro-inspired rhythm. In this piece, Carmen (a seductress in every sense of the word), sings about a rebellious bird; one cannot control it, just like one cannot control Love. In her rendition, Janice made us all feel the heat of Spain and the flutter of the wings of love equally.

Mark then brought Dawn Derow to the stage, to sing "Glitter and Be Gay" from Candide, a parody of the Old Operetta English Form, but with a Bernstein twist. You can hear opera, musical theater, and English Operetta modes all mixed into this one piece. as it is one of the more infamous coloratura songs in modern operatic-infused works. Dawn opened up by lying prostrate on the piano in abject disgust of being in "Paris, Fraaaaaaaaance!" but ended up at the end of the song with as many twinkles in her eye as on her diamond bracelets.
