The Salon Wrap-Up for September 16th, 2018: "The Secret of Life"

After a two-week hiatus, Salon has returned! To kick us off for the fall, the warm and lovely Barb Malley was our co-host for the very first time. The theme for the evening was "The Secret of Life," and, given Barb's background (she has been both a nun and a psychologist, as well as a performer!), she certainly has some life experience to contribute on this topic. Barb started things off with an appropriately philosophical take on the song Once Upon a Time (Charles Strouse and Lee Adams).

Barb is a MAC Award winner (2016) in the musical comedy category, and her upcoming show at Don't Tell Mama combines two important themes in her personal and performing life: "From Brooklyn to Broadway" opens Thursday, October 4th.  With that in mind, Barb put together a set of songs chronicling the ups and downs of life, Her first selection was Look to the Rainbow (Burton Lane and Yip Harburg, Finian's Rainbow), honoring her Irish heritage. After that song, Barb felt that the Irish were preparing us for something good, so to illustrate, she chose Something's Coming (Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim) from West Side Story. She closed her set with a charming and hilarious Brooklyn love story, He Had Refinement (Arthur Schwartz, Dorothy Fields, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn).

To close the show, Barb finally supplied an answer to the evening's riddle, singing James Taylor's The Secret of Life.

 Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

For tonight's Classical Corner, Mark Janas introduced a piece that he says saved his life when he was in college.  The piece is Kreisleriana, Op.16, a fantasy in eight movements, by Robert Schumann. Schumann wrote this piece in only four days, in 1838, and it is considered one of his best works. (Indeed, Schumann sometimes referred to it as his favorite composition.) Kreisleriana (the title is taken from the name of a character in ETA Hoffmann's stories) is a highly dramatic piece which reflects two sides of Schumann's personality: Florestan, the impulsive side, and Eusabius, the introspective, gentle side.
Mark played the second and third movements for us tonight. One of the chief characteristics of this work is the back and forth between the two "characters."  The second movement begins lyrically, and then alternates with a fast, driving, and chromatically complex theme. These two contrasting natures dominate the fabric of Kreisleriana.
