The Salon Wrap-Up for November 4, 2018: "Something Sweet"

The theme was "Something Sweet" -- and how sweet it was!  Jeff Macauley was our wonderfully talented host for the evening.  He serenaded us with great tunes, some of which even Mark hadn't heard before!  He started the first set with "Won't Someone Please Belong To Me?"  He started the second set with the moving "It Happened Once Before," and then the swingin' and jazzy "Jack & Jill" and "The Three Bears."  Jeff closed the show with the tender and lovely "Just The Way I Am."  All of his songs for the night were Bobby Troup ("Route 66") songs.

Jeff will be returning to Pangea (178 2nd Avenue, NYC) in "Where Did the Gentlemen Go: The Songs of Bobby Troup/The Life of Scott Bowers" on Tuesday, November 13th and Friday, December 7th, 2018 at 7pm.

Salon Spotlight

Our Salon Spotlight was none other than the incredible Raissa Katona Bennett!  Raissa's credits include "Phantom of the Opera" (Broadway), "Cats" and "Parade" (National Tours).  She started with a song that (jokingly) had nothing to do with her upcoming shows, but was so touching, "Stop Time."  She followed with "I Had a Dream About You," and then a song from her Jerome Kern show, "All The Things You Are/They Didn't Believe."

Raissa will be at Green Room 42 (570 10th Avenue, NYC 10036 [inside Yotel -- 4th Floor]) in "Can't Help Singing: The Music of Jerome Kern" on Tuesday, November 13th and Tuesday, November 27th at 7pm.  She will ALSO be at The Magnolia Room (57 Main Street, Norwalk, CT 06851) in "What A Wonderful World" with Kenneth Gartman on Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th at  8pm And Sunday, November 25th, 2018 at 3pm.

Quick Wrap - Classical Corner

We had a special guest for Classical Corner tonight, the remarkably talented Heather Bobeck.  Heather was selected in 2017 as a winner for the Milton Cross Award performing Verdi's Sempre Libera, as well as a New York district winner in this year’s Metropolitan Opera National Council competition. She was previously the recipient of the prestigious Mary Ann and Spencer Everett Scholarship in Voice, as well as the Choir Scholarship at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk. As the winner of the Richard Deas Concerto Competition, Ms. Bobeck sang Johann Strauss’ Fruhlingsstimmen with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra February 2012.  And these are just some of her accomplishments -- and when you hear her voice, you know why.  It's so pure and lovely.  Mark and Heather shared some wonderfully sweet lieds (literally meaning song -- usually describing romantic German poems set to music in the 19th century) with us tonight.  She first sang Franz Schubert's "Du fist die Ruh."  Next was Robert Schumann's "Widmung," followed by Schubert's "Au die Muisk" and "Nacht und Träume."  Mark shared a couple interesting facts with us, too.  Schubert (known for lied-ing ;) ) was in complete awe of Beethoven and was invited to see him.  But when he saw Beethoven, he was so devastated by the magnitude of what was before him that he fled the room.  Now, on Beethoven's death bed, he was given a book of Schubert's (then deceased) music, and he pronounced him a genius.  Not bad for old Schubes, eh? ;)
